Never been to Portland myself, but if we are talking foodie cities, LA is a fucking nuclear explosion of amazing food.
You could probably live here your whole life, go to a different restaurant twice a day, and still find new amazing places to eat until the day you die.
The girlfriend and I have a new hobby, that is finding new foodie places..little unknown hole-in-the-wall restaurants that have the best food.
The fancy places are good too once in a while. But we like discovering the little hidden gems. And they are ALL OVER THE PLACE here.
Although yeah, if we are talking full... Los Angeles is full. what there's like 18 million people within 50 miles from me in LA/OC

Any city of that size has to have phenomenal food.... nobody would live there if it didn't, lol.

The beaches and sunshine 24/7 don't hurt either
It doesn't rain here 365 days a year

I live a mile from the beach in OC, most of the smog is mostly inland and the LA area
The air quality here is also supposedly a lot better than it was years ago

The air quality in LA is actually not bad.
And the breeze from the coast blows all the crap to the Inland Empire.

Yah, but I've watched the news enough to know that there are occasionally freakishly hot days in LA, which I would hate.... of all the aforementioned cities, I believe San Diego by far has the best climate.

the air quality there is really swinging back to the more polluted times.

Malibu smells like poo and it's on the beach.

Not sure what cities you're referring to, but San Diego is hot.
The closer you get to Mexico, the closer you are to the Equator, the hotter it is...

It's basically 90 there right now- same as OC. When it gets to the 90s, it's fucking hot in OC.

The fucking desert is cooler than the coast today. (Palm Springs is 84.)

EDIT: As for the perfect California climate, I'd say the central coast.

It is pretty fucking hot today.

Although after all my travels and living in various places
I'd prefer to die from heat than freeze to death. Being cold fucking sucks.

I can deal with the 90 degree days here.
90 degree days in the summer in DC area also means 90% humidity.

That's simply not the whole picture, you can get a microclimate, as is the case of San Diego, due to the topography (the bay, hills, mountains, canyons etc)... Portland is the same way, much of Oregon does not share its milder climate.

The average highs speak for themselves.  San Diego has one of the best summer climates and over all yearly climates around.

Of course you can.

Also, the temperature at a coastal airport is not really representative of all of San Diego.
LAX has the same average highs. As does any coastal city you pick on the way.
