Mushroom Compost at local hardware store
    #14252459 - 04/07/11 10:43 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I was at my local Ace Hardware today, enthusiastically perusing the possibilities of normal garden stuff that could be potential mushroom cultivation equipment, and I was looking at peat moss.  And whataya know, right next to it in big bags was "Green Country Mushroom Compost".  So, my question,  anybody use this stuff before?  Any good?  Was thinking about utilizing it for a casing layer.

Casing layers need to be void of nutrients, like vermiculite.

That stuff may be a good bulk substrate though.  From their website...

Our Secret: Green Country Soil is more than just another bagging company. The secret to our quality products is Mushroom Compost. We use Mushroom Compost as the base product for many of our soil lines. This highly organic compost is the fertile medium used to grow tabletop mushrooms. Once the mushroom-growing cycle is complete, the compost is heat sterilized and becomes a very rich growing medium.

I bet that shit is the bomb!

True, I guess i mis-spoke about that.  Lol.  But yeah, thinking about buying some.  It's only 3.50 for a 50lb bag.

It was already used to grow mushrooms, so the nutrients are consumed, then it is sterilized and bagged. It is for plants now.

It might work as a casing, because most of the nutes are gone, and the Lowes peat molds like crazy because of all the sticks in it.

yep. there are 2 kinds of mushroom compost, that
which is intended as a substrate to grow shrooms,
and the much more common mush compost that is used
substrate, which is great for plants. this type is likely
what you saw at ace. it is no good for our hobby, as
it is spent sub.

mushroom compost is truly some good stuff. I have put tons of it in my garden over the years and if I use cube compost from a friend I get little friends. If you grow shrooms you will generate plenty for your garden with all the spent bulk. Get a big compost heap going in a shady corner FTW.
