HI, I am planning to plant some poppies but I have a question, how long would it take to grow so I can harvest opium? Thanks and any tips on poppies are welcome like how to germinate and how to harvest opium.

It takes about 2 months germination to petal drop.
I would recommend sowing/germinating the seeds IN the ground where they are to be put eventually. Poppies IME do not fare well with transplantation. It is possible to transplant them, but I have found that even when I am RIDICULOUSLY careful when doing so, some STILL experience transplant shock and dont do well/or just die.
Take the seeds (I like to use a salt shaker that has the holes enlarged a bit via a dremel rotary tool) and spread them on your flower bed. Optimally, you want the plants to be about 8"-12" apart when fully mature, but you can always thin them out later, once they get larger. Thats why my preference is to just sow them thinner, since I don't have the heart to willingly kill any good morphine producing plant before its prime!

Oh yeah, JUST spread the seeds on your flower bed. No need to cover them with ANY dirt unless there are a lot of birds foraging about. I have found that if you cover them with too much dirt they wont pop through, so its better to just put them on the ground and maybe lightly tamp them in with a hoe or your shoe.

The germination rate seems to be low, too. I've only grown one seedling and it took about 20 seeds. I'm about 2 months deep and still not much growth =P

use peet pots (biodegradable) or those biodegradable cubes that are used for hydroponic germination. you can just stick those cubes in the soil once they germinate. that 's what i'm planning to use. I actually made a post with my plan and thought it posted but it actually didn't so....bleh anyway.

Individuals grown from the prior fall seem to be more potent that those that I've planted in the spring.

not even close. from my experience every seed i dropped sprouted. if they didnt for u, they u got some shitty seeds or u fucked them up when they were young. shroomie glen is on the money fo sure, listen to him
2 monthes is the only part i disagree with. sometimes it can be longer than this. in my experience it can be as long as 4 monthes sometimes and the season can have an impact on this big time, esp if started in the winter monthes, depending on where u are. tho between 2-4 monthes is the estimated wait from seed to greed but with me, ive started them in december and waited till april/may until flowering....but im down south so i can get away with that... most of the time anyway
drop those seeds where u intend on harvesting. never shoot for a transplant. but if they are in containers, leave them there until harvest. sprinkle seeds onto the surface and wet them with the mist nozzle on your hose. avoid flooding your spot when u water. and let the soil dry out a little before u rewater but dont let it go too far. because a drought can scorch a patch to death in no time. i like to spray the seedlings every morning before the sun hits the spot, then as they grow larger i water every 2 days and when flower hits and harvest is near i keep the watering to an absolute minimum. but yea watering cycles are the only real trick to growing poppies. and even that is something u can catch on really quick with.
happy harvesting

I think it was just shitty seeds. I had a bad couple batches of mycelium plugs and bad batch of Lovage from this same gardening store. I have my one seedling in a small pot indoors, and it might not have lasted as long if I didn't bury the rest of the root that just shot out. I think it was stretching for light a little at the beginning and didn't grow like it was supposed to. Next year I'll grow a few more to get the hang of it. Want to try some tea =P

An interesting side note, when I was researching ways to increase yield and potency, I found some articles about inter species hybrids between P.somniferum and P.orientialis. In an article there was a picture of some hybrids growing in Czech. The flowers are a sort of lavender fucha they seem to be a common source of wreath poppies as I've grown seeds collected from two different batches which were the same.
If you have access to some of these seeds realize that poppies mostly self pollinate. So the ratio of plants displaying hybrid characteristics is not 100%. The plants which displayed the hairy stem of orientialis poppies yelled the best. Unfortunately the plants have to have bolted to see this.

indeed. its totally alrite if they lay down for a while
to darklight, it was likely the seeds, i agree. bad seeds have very low germ rates, esp the premature ones (like the white ones for ex). if i were u, id take that one in a container and put it in the sunlight pronto. tho do yer best to ween it into full light as it will be a bit of a shock at first. like a few hours a day and then gradually build it up. tho a week should be all the time needed to get it to full sun. i doubt youl have enough for tea with one plant tho man. youl have opium to smoke at least. best of luck to u man
