Traveling, Broke and Sexy (any travelin' folks?)

Me and a buddy are planning to go hitchhiking all over the country (got a couple places we wanna go) this summer. Maybe even hit up Canada. Gunna be living out of our packs, hiking national parks, camping in the woods, and I'm bringing my mandolin so I can busk for change if/when we run out of money. Maybe we'll even meet someone who'd be willing to show some newbies the ropes of train hopping.
Any of you guys ever do anything like this?

careful when riding the rails- tons of railroad detectives these days, and they are less likely to throw you off a moving train than they are to burden you with a ton of bullshit criminal charges

I've heard they mainly just give you a ticket. If even that. It's like a $500 ticket or somethin. No biggie. Just leave the state and dont go back until you pay it. But I could be wrong.
Haha riding trains is scary for lots of reasons.

I hitch hiked from BC to Ontario and then trainhopped and hitched across the US Florida to Seattle, summer of 04.
I've done bicycle tours and motorcycle tours the past couple years.
I've written a few threads about my adventures, if you care to do a search.
Goodluck to you.

I did this last august through december. Best experience of my life so far. go wherever the road and people take you. Talk to everyone you meet. When I did this the most important thing I learned and experienced was karma. For me now karma is 100% real and helped out alot. My best advice would be do everything with a goal or reason, even if that reason is to travel aimlesly. Whatever happens take it in for what it is.
Hope you have a great experience!!!

Ive traveled far and wide and ended up in the craziest of situations, been to every state but 4 of em and been to 15 countries. Most of the traveling I did broke or on an extremely tight budget too.
There are various "cool spots" that are stop ins for traveler kids in just about every state, major city and mid sized college town.
I only really panhandle as a last resort and usually it's to get enough money to make more money. As long as you have some money you can always make more money it's just a matter of networking and being in the right place at the right time. Sometimes you can make money with no money but not always and especially not if you're dirty.
There are 4 levels of dirtykiddom: 1. Smells dirty - this is when the clothes/ smell dirt ridden 2. Looks dirty - this is when the clothes/kid look visibly dirty 3. Feels dirty - this is when the clothes take on a "crusty" texture as do the wearer 4. Sounds dirty - This is when the clothes have an audible "crunch" when you try to fold or bend them.
Ive gotten more pussy when I was hungry, broke and homeless then I did in a house with a nice job, nice car, clean clothes and clean cut. When I get housed up for too long i just become stagnate and dont even bother with trying to get laid. When Im out on the street 24-7 I dont have to try, I automatically get hit on because Im around to be hit on. Sometimes women eve took me in and tried to clean me up.

I haven't hitchhiked much but I've traveled by road a fair amount, here's my advice. Keep your head about you at all times, there are a lot of good people in the world and it's easy to fall into a habit of trusting folks, but just remember that anyone you meet is going to be a stranger. Don't be rude just, be cautious. I'd keep a knife with you at all times, a folding one that is legal in every state you're going to be in. Despite that, be friendly always. A little bit of courtesy never hurt anyone. Good luck, I'm sure you'll have a great time

I dont no how you could do this broke. What are you gonna eat and how you gonna buy or get drugs to keep the trip interesting. And what about chicks? No money usually means alot less chicks.

As I said above i actually found girls EASIER to come by.
As for food in most places there are places that give away free food and there are also dumpsters if you arent too proud to eat out of em.
Wherever I go people always want to get me high for free. Ive always been "that guy" in that aspect.

Haha thats awesome. I'm gunna try to stay as clean as possible but I don't know how possible thats gunna be. Haha the thought of getting laid never crossed my mind. If it happens that'd be sweet but I'm prepared to go without. Yeah I'd feel weird about panhandling. I give travelers I see money though, so if it came down to that (like if I got my mandolin stolen) I wouldnt feel too bad about doin it though.

Think about it. What've I got to pay for? One doesnt need very much food at all. Lotsa folks get by dumpster diving. I'm not above eating someone elses crumbs (as long as they arent rotting crumbs). Plus busking for money seems to work well. If you're playing an instrument lots of people will kick you down some change. The only drugs I really do nowadays is weed. But if I have to go without its no biggie. Girls? Fuck it. I'm not gettin laid at home so goin on the road cant hurt. Plus this trip is for me is about seeing the world outside of my tiny life. To get some perspective on what life really means. Strip down to the essentials of survival to learn somethin about myself, y'know? Thats more important to me than girls right now.

Food is everywhere. As humans, almost every green thing is edible. And if not, play music/beg for change to buy a jar of peanuts . soup kitchens will give you a free meal. plus theres always dumpsters. As long as the food isnt rotten you can still eat it. It's really not as unsanitary as you think. What disease are you gunna catch eating out of a dumpster?

As per the not getting too dirty part i was fine for a while. There were a couple of periods of time where I went for a month without a shower but there were other periods of time where I had a hotel room every night and would shower twice. I was one of the cleanest traveler kids I ran with. At that point though i had hooked up with a crew of locals and we all did our hustles then pitched in on hotel rooms.
For a while I lived in an abandoned building that had a working shower and bathrooms.

Right on, glad you're going prepared. Another thing, trust your gut. If you have a bad feeling, or something just seems weird in a situation, get out. Worst thing that happens is you lose a few hours waiting for another ride, but make sure you put safety first. And if for whatever reason a gun gets put to your head, do whatever the scary trucker says

Seems like lotsa traveling folks get addicted to stuff at some point.
Are most addicted? I've heard junkies and alcoholics are a big population amongst travelers? Is that pretty much true?
I'm already a pothead though so I guess i'll just sink further into that

Alot of freight riders are junkies or reckless drug/alcohol wastecases, same with punks.
I met some sketchy hippies too ...

Most traveler kids start out as idealists and turn into fuck ups after getting fucked over so much they just say "fuck it" and become completely selfish and animalistic.
Traveling turned me from an idealistic overly trusting young hippie to a dirty shwilly hustling wook. Eventually i always got housed up and became more domesticated again.
For a while I was even gutter bumming it and frequenting the Shroomery at the same time.

I met some sketchy hippies too ...
I'd say it's rare to find a young idealist such as yourself, but certainly, they are out there.
It's probably a 1/10 ratio of decent folks to total fuck ups.
huh. Good to know .
hopefully I'll find others in my position. My junky friends at home rip me off enough as it is (another reason not to spend my summer at home)

It's more difficult to be a mobile junkie than a mobile alcoholic since alcohol is available everywhere. Most junkies are homebums and most that do travel stick to dead tour or something so they can always get their junk.
Im not sure how common tweaker and crackhead travelers are but ive met a few. Crackheads tend to get hemmed up in a town very quickly.

I plan on fishing and hunting for all of my food. I will have a couple of hundred dollars with me for emergency funds. but that is a worst case scenario.
dollar menu FTW
plus I plan on packing my rucksack with protein powders that you mix with water and end up giving you 800 calories and 30g of protein. Food is one of my lowest concerns.
Finding people willing to give a hitch-hiker a ride is my biggest, but I think if I hang at the truck stop long enough I can find someone willing to take me along their route. I used to work at a truck stop and most would love a companion. As long as they own their own rig and they arent using a corporate truck

aye. homebums are to be avoided.
luckily I fucked with junk a few times when my friends first got into it but I hated the high. opiates just arent my thing. plus I've seen now what it does to people. so i aint worried about that one. plenty of other traps to fall into i guess though. I'm gunna try to just stick to mary jane on the road.

Yeah I'm not too worried about food. How much do peanuts cost? I mean really. You can eat for REAL cheap if your aim in procuring food is survival, not pleasure.
P.S. did you get my email?

When trying to survive on very little you will learn the dollar menu is expensive as hell.
Fishing, hunting, etc will be a bitch because you will never know what land is owned or notm fishing is not always in season etc.
I suggest working small temporary jobs and eating bread, bologna, and vitamins and water.

i had an ebt card (food stamps) while i was traveling, also hit up a lot of feeds - food not bombs, local churches, food banks, also dumpsters. not proud of being a bum, but i was young at the time. now going to school so i can at least trade a service.
in my experience, no, you won't meet a lot of junkie traveling kids. most everybody who is a traveling psychedelic user is chill.

I am not much of a reader. And when I do read, I read instruction manuals. Like survival guides. I am weird.
I am hoping to change that. I am taking a Ghandi book with me, as well as War and Peace, and a poetry book. Got a nice size pack, I am most woried about how I am going to carry my tent and sleeping bag. Thinking of trading the sleeping bag for a sleeping mat. Weather should be pretty damn warm, even at night.

Sounds good man. Just dont be one of those pussy backpackers from LA that go to the Appalachia mountains for a soul searching journey and have rich friends drop food from a helicopter every few hundred miles.
Them wannabe survivalist fags crack me up.

Nah, I am from Arizona. Spent weeks backpacking in tonto national forest and just never been to Cali before, so I figured I would check it out and see what all the hype is about.
I am just hoping it wont be tooo hard to get medical bud while I am there.
I am still open to suggestions although I sort of have it narrowed down to either Isabella Lake or a better option Santa Barbara which is like an hour north of LA but surrounded by mountains. Hell I might end up growing bud and never leave.

It might be quicker and easier to grow your own good weed while out on the trial. Plant a few seeds, read a book while plucking bugs from your dearest ones, it will be all over before ya know it. Plan on walking out with a backpack full of something amazing.

You dont really need anything specific to cali. Just getting water and food in general is good.
I would have a few good small tents with me, a couple knives, many sets of flint and steel, a few packages of bic lighters, plastic and metal containers for keeping and boiling water/ food.
Clean water to drink without dieing of parasites will be the biggest adventure. You need to boil and filter that shit yourself or put some chemicals in spring water you come across.

why several tents? it will be pain in the ass enough to haul 1 let alone several.
I will definitely be taking one of those bottles you can throw in the fire that sanitizes your water as well as bringing some iodine tablets or whatever they are (I am faded and the name is escaping me currently)

I find it easy to make ad-hoc tents out of tarps and fallen tree limbs into sorta teepees. Often times abandoned tarps can be found in the middle of the woods or picked up cheaply at hardware stores.

Yeah I noticed big lots had some for 4 bucks each... but but.. I like my tent and dislike snakes who love warmth. id give up my sleep bag for an inflatable mat (which is probably what ill do. ill have clothes to keep me either cold or the heat
I changed my path. I am going through Utah along the colorado river and then that leads right to highway 40 where i can go straight to Denver and the surrounding areas, never been to Denver but always wanted to. should be a beautiful time of year the

What's good to have is a hennesy hammock or a similar camping hammock. The things weigh hardly anything and are much more compact than a tent. They also have integrated bug nets and rain covers and keep you off the ground as to avoid snakes.
I prefer to the ridge rest mats and find them lighter and easier to carry. If you are going with a car its easier to have a bunch of tents and air mattresses and crazy stuff.
Back in the day I used to travel with 70 lb packs, 4 bags and a all crazy weighed down with anything I could possibly need.
Nowadays I travel much lighter, usually with a pack resembling other people's day packs in size.
