Hey guys, its almost time for the season of ovoids. I'm going to be going down in the ohio river valley on my first mushroom hunt this weekend. Hopes are up, average highs and lows of next week are in the 70s/50s with 50% chance of rain. Just wanted to post this for any tips ya'll would like to give me. I know they grow in overflow areas so i'm going to scout within 100 ft of the shore for these precious shrooms.

I had the question of do you think its too early for ovoids? and was wondering if they'd be more common on the ohio side or kentucky side of the river.

I've been looking the last few days along the Ohio river in Cincinnati. There are almost no mushrooms out whatsoever. Should be starting in the next few weeks though.

I myself am going to go along the shore of newport and covington, and the temperatures are supposed to sustain an average of 70s high and 50s low for the next week. this is the temprerature that supports ovoids right? with rain too, its supposed to rain the next couple of days?

Your not suppose to discuss the weather or exact locations, but...
There have been morels found in the Kentucky, WV, and Indiana recently. With the warmer weather there is a possibility you could find morels and ovoids. Do research and know the habitat your looking for - besides that no one will be able to tell you if they will be out in your area. Take pictures of what you find and post them here - look at a sample ID request so you know what to look for while hunting.
Good luck

Ovoids in the Cincinnati area seem to start fruiting a month or so after finds in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Third week of April is the earliest find for our area that's ever been posted here.
There's nothing out right now. At least I didn't see a single mushroom anywhere when I went to the park yesterday.

You will not start finding them til atleast 4/20. Usually found them around 4/28 or 4/29 first ones of the year. The biggest flush of the year for me was always right around 5/14 + or - 2 days. Good luck and post up some pics as I no longer live anywhere near there so I can only dream about the hunt this year.

So theres no chance of finding them this weekend even with weather being in high 70's for a week straight with rain to top it?

I wouldn't say there is no chance, but the chance is very low. Still, get out there and look as you never know and you can be finding good habitat for when the season picks up.

It usually takes about a week for them to pop up after the conditions are right.
