Blue/Green molds.... how should they be cleaned?
    #1424796 - 04/03/03 12:55 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Hi Guys,

A friend of mine made up 3 jars and left them for a week. They were fine so he inoculated them and obviously the syringes were bad cause pretty soon the jars started growing a blueish greenish mold.... So I was after some advice to give him on a safe ways of cleaning out the jars and getting them ready to start again.

PS - He has 2 different jars going - Tasmainian Goldtops...They are in a nice dark plastic container but winter is starting here - my friend has a water heater and or a heat mat to use? How warm should they be again?

Clean the jars with warm soapy water, then let soak in 10% bleach and water for an hour or two, then rinse and you're ready to go

The jars should be around 85F, if you use a heat pad make sure it will not dry out the jars.

Fill a bucket, or sink with hot soapy water & add some bleach to it. Twist the lids VERY loose, but do not open.

Submerge the jars in the hot soapy bleach water, so they fill with it.

Doing that keeps a CONTAM SPORE CLOUD from jumping out of the jars & getting all over you & everywhere else.

Once full of the soapy water, remove lid & dump contents in the trash & wash out the jars very well.

Simple as that. Better luck next time

6T.

even with mold or contams.. i have just cleaned using dish soap to get the actual material out. It is also anti-bacterial. After PCing nothing should be alive. If you arnt PCing.. definately clean with bleach solution.

Oh cool... that's easy enough then!

With the heating, is placing the jars in a small amount of water and adding the water heater more dangerous for contams? Just thinking the heat mat might dry everything out a bit too much.
