Habitat: Where does it grow? woods, decaying palm tree
Gills: yellow
Stem: thick, dense
Cap: pretty color
Bruising: I need to look tonight when I get home
Other information: I will take more pictures if needed

Any idea on species?
Should I make a tea?

What is the spore size?
Are the spores dextranoid?
Does it have pleurocystidia?
Ok never mind, it is Gymnopilus palmicola.
Excellent and rare find! Please upload those pics to mushroomobserver.org, as no one from that site has ever uploaded pics of that taxon before.
I went looking for these the last time I was in Guadalajara, but it was late in the season and the one palm tree that is known to fruit them had none.
The Hesler Gymnopilus monograph does not mention green staining, but he usually misses that feature and the Mexican material is definitely active. Most of the red capped Gymnopilus end up being active.

They definitely struck me with their unique look out in the woods. Good to know about the red capped gyms, I will upload to MO as well. Thanks again Mr. Rockefeller!!
Okay, I added them: http://mushroomobserver.org/65271?q=441Q

Why does the wiki page for this species list it's edibility as "can cause allergic reactions"?

Appears to be a bug in wikipedia, the edibility field was left blank and it said "can cause allergic reactions".
I fixed it.
OP, can you take some good pictures of these for the wikipedia article?

Hey Alan and wiscokid,
Hey I went back to that same palm tree and picked alot!! I also found 3 or 4 more palms with the same kind growing on them. They start out as fat and chunky with more red on top. When they mature...well look at the pics...\
do you still think it is g.palmicola?
Im happy to upload to MO also.
I've got a bunch of pics...

ANytime bro make the tea on the strong side if your only using the gyms !!! Don't worry they are EXTREMELY mellow and relaxing - unlike cubes or other common majik!!! - Gyms are NOT potent - so much much more than usual is needed!!!!! ENJOY

From the little info I can find, these seem to match Gymnopilus subtropicus quite well.

I don't think so, due to the fact that the younger mushrooms have a reddish cap.

Yeah, I'm probably wrong, Alan. I think I misinterpreted "ferruginous" as a more orange color, and the pics I found online are confusing (me).
