social programs are a far larger expenditure than defense spending

Other than Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security, the other social programs that are getting the axe are a drop in the bucket. If you don't make cuts to SS or Defense, you don't accomplish anything meaningful to pay down our debt. Health care, SS, and defense are all around 20% of our budget each.
In other words, the point I was trying to make above is that defunding Planned Parenthood or shutting down the national forests are bullshit solutions. Both the dems and GOP can do better and need to reform health care/SS/defense to make an impact.

Good. I'd like to think it's permanent but I'm not that naive - no Government program ever does anything but grow, and grow, and grow.

its about time this happened, those rich fucks sit there and "ask" for time to speak, cut that shit out and just let the big man up front just be like...ok time for u to stfu now goodbye. That would save us like a million dollars a year right thar
then they need to stop all these stupid bills with shit tacked on...just debate on a SINGLE issue and shit would pass or not pass so much quicker, its like ok should we increase funding for schools SURE, but wait this bill also includes a new program designed to help ship immigrants into the country to work at taco bell and to put a xray van on every street in the US

hahahah OMG i got the biggest LULZ in class today.
so basically when prop 19 was coming around in november, I went around and passed out flyers and talked to people to vote yes for it, and alot of them just ignored me or just restated anti prohibiton sentiment etc. and we all know prop. 19 lost by what, 5%?
Soo any ways today in class, people come and talk to us to try and vote to not cut state funding for community colleges. they are planning on increasing the tuition from 26$/unit to anywhere from 66$-108$ per unit. Everyone was all tripping out and they said that the community colleges funding is going to be cut inbetween 400 million and 1 billion dollars if the measure goes through.
I raise my hand with a grin on my face laughing a little bit and say " so basically our education is being cut anywhere from 400M-1B dollars right?" "Yeah" " You know California spent inbetween 700M-1B dollars last year arresting and prosectuting citizens for marijuana related crimes?, And that we are due to spend another 350-500M dollars this yeah doing the same to non violent marijuana offenders, Our state is broke and we have no choice but to accept tuition price hikes, you should have voted yes for prop 19"
