I can't really see how music couldn't exist. As long as you can hear sound you can make music. Even if you can't you can still make music.

great post maestroelite !

yet i couldn't agree more with socrates when it comes to music...(and poetry)

"Discussing poetry strikes me as no different from second-rate drinking parties of the agora crowd. These people, largely uneducated and unable to entertain themselves over wine by using their own voices to generate conversation, pay premium prices for flute-girls and rely on the extraneous voice of the reed flute as background music for their parties. But when well-educated gentlemen drink together, you will not see girls playing the flute or the lyre or dancing, but as a group that knows how to get together without these childish frivolities, conversing civilly no matter how heavily they are drinking." Socrates 347 d

Music, behind silence, is as close as one can become to describing the undescribeable

Music is communication. Mating call. Letting your pack know there is danger or food about. Later, tribal drums were meant to waken the gods so they would answer our cries. Without music, we'd all be mutes or extinct or communicate via telepathy.

I agree with Socrates that music can be a crutch sometimes though, especially in social situations. I couldn't imagine going to a party without at least something playing softly in the background. Music lightens the soul and the mood.

I first had this same thought like 2 years ago so I started asking people what they would do if music didn't exist. I've been thinking about it more lately and I've come to realize that music is so important that it doesn't make any sense that musicians have to struggle to make a living. Music is almost just as important and food and shelter.

I'm different, I don't like "background music"

I hate it infact.

Would you rather hear one last song and then have die, or live the rest of your life without music.

For me its that last song.
Music has helped me through some really tough times. I don't think I would be alive today without it

Music defines what we are and can be for sure. No better way to communicate on this rock. Unless your deaf of course. That would suck.
