Filter for Grain Prep
    #14246649 - 04/06/11 09:37 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Im going out to buy a pressure cooker and some rye today and will be inoculating some rye jars. I've been searchn around a bit and i guess the most common filters used are tyvek, synthetic filter disks, and pillow stuffing...

My question is how exactly should i prepare the lid? Just cut a middle-finger nail sized hole and stuff with pillow stuffing? And inoc in a different needle sized hole? Grains isn't cakes so there isn't any dry layer of verm to save my ass now.

How do i keep an inoc hole "filtered" still if im going to inject a needle through it? Micropore tape after the inoc? Excuse my noobness.

I like haveing the hole in the middle with polyfil'pillow stuffing'  then another hole on the side of the lid filled with silicone for my injection port so i dont have to go threw poly fill,, and just get some priorty mail envelopes from usps.com for free and use them for filters save u some money and they work great

Im surprisingly inexperienced with silicone and poly fill...wont the needle melt it from flaming red hot prior to inoc? So i just stuff pillow stuffing in one hole and fill a smaller needle sized hole with either silicone or polyfill and let harden then just stab the needle right through it when i inoc and it re-seals itself?

Again excuse my noobness

u let the need cool before sticking it in or it will melt it, yep stuff pillow stuffing in middle hole on lid, and I just have another hole filled with silicone "let it dry" so u just go threw it and it self heals, but thats just what I do u can also just go threw the polyfil and not bother with the second hole if u want

Polyfill is the same thing as pillow stuffing

I use a 3/8" drill bit, and drill a hole in the center. I then take a nice sized nail and hammer a hole for the inoculation point.  I have 5 quart jars. 3 with poly and tyvek. 1 with only tyvek, and 1 with only poly.

They have all colonized at the same speed, and show no signs of contamination.  If you use tyvek I would do it like this.

Jar, Lid with hole, tyvek, then screw cap.  In the tek I followed I did Jar, Tyvek, Lid, then screw cap.  I don't like this because when I had to shake the WBS it came in contact with a larger portion of tyvek then the way I recommended.

I put tyvek down first then the lid and then put a piece of micropore tape over the breather hole. I have 2 holes one has silicone for the injection and breather. Once i feel the mycelium has a good hold i take off the micropore  tape. When i pc them though i put a water proof tape over the breather, just incase moisture gets in there

you need the 'Lets Grow Mushrooms!' dvd.

for years ive used pillow stuffing with a silicon injection port next to the glass rim. the neat thing with pillow stuffing is you can inject right through the stuffing if you want, so long as your needle is long enough to exit the fluff of stuffing. if the filter gets wet, it can set a path for contamination to follow

I do lids this way too, except I bought some white plastic ones. I find this way the best way to do lids. I was having all sorts of problems using polyfil/pillow stuffing as a gas exchange filter.

The clear silicone works fine too, actually I've had problems when using the red high temp stuff with it being too rigid. It doesn't have the give the clear stuff has and I've pulled injection ports off when I make them with the red silicone. I even sand/scrape the edges and rim of the hole so it's really rough, and I get the same problems.

My 2 pesos...

I used to go jar > tyvek > lid > ring with a 1/4" hole in the lid with micropore tape covering it and a smaller hole near the edge of the lid with silicon for the injection port. This worked for a little while but contams kept showing up. Once I got fed up I learned that bad stuff was growing between the tyvek and the lid due to the order they were installed in. This caused contams to set in late in the cycle after the 2nd or 3rd shake, so they would be invisible until spawned.

Now I do jar > lid > tyvek > ring. The micropore was removed and replaced with polyfill in the 1/4" hole. Still use the injection port but it's tougher to hit since it's off-center and hidden by the tyvek. Ultimately there should just be a small set like this for the initial inoculation then the other lids should just have a single hole with polyfill for grain-to-grain jars.

Long winded, hope it helps.

Have you noticed this helping cut down your contam rates?

Yes, simply changing the order of the tyvek and lid fixed my contam problems. I took away the moisture layer between the tyvek (exposed to the grains) and the lid. That was trapping water and contams were growing there. With the lid facing the grain and the tyvek on the outside, water doesn't get trapped.
