Whats wrong with my FC/Cakes??? *pics*
    #14246493 - 04/06/11 08:52 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

The two cakes with shrooms on them came out of the jar with pins on them. The others have been in the fc just as long (about 6 days) with no signs of pinning. What am i doing wrong?

Where are the holes in your FC??? 1/4 Inch holes every 2 inches.... :strokebeard2: I've been told FAE is the main pinning trigger. Mist then Fan If you arent using a SGFC.

Ive got about 12 holes along the bottom just above the perlite with an aquarium air pump rated for a 150gal. tank blasting fresh air in through 4 holes in the top.Is that enough to produce proper FAE?

Place the back of your fingers in the top of a cake. Do they feel dry?

Im still pretty new. The best advice I can do is tell you to follow RR's videos (The link in my signature) to a T. And do exactly as he says. Its worked wonders for me.

Ditch the pumps, drill more holes, mist to replace lost moisture, fan moar.

that is all.
have fun!

i have 10 (4 on the long sies; 2 on the short) holes that line my FC at Perlite level and 8 holes on the lid (4 equally spaced across the long sides).

I mist and fan and have never had any problems.

i'm not going to knock a SGFC nor Mr. Rabbit for he has exacted mighty changes in the mushroom community with his wisdom and McGuyver-ness.

the SGFC just never worked for me.. i have 3 in my garage that just never really gave me what i needed.

i had to come up with something that worked and through a few rounds of testing this is what i came up with..

i'm working on a triangle/inverteded triangle way of setting up the holes on the sides to help more with FAE and give it a sort of cooler look while you're at it.

Yes, but, following the tek to a T initially is what led you to better understand what innovations and deviations needed to be done to grow in your specific environmental conditions.
Diving headfirst into the shallow end of the pool is not the best way to go about getting in the water.

How did you "feel" them? By simply touching them? That ain't gonna work holmes, best way to judge moisture level in your cakes is by picking them up and "feeling" how heavy/light they are in comparison to when they came out of the dunk. Again, to reiterate, your best bet now is removing those cakes and setting them aside, ditching the pumps, drilling your FC up with the proper amount of holes, return the cakes, then mist to replace lost moisture and fan to displace co2 buildup.
Humidity is not king when it comes to pinning trigger and, in fact, takes a back seat to more major triggers like FAE and Lighting.

cakes sometimes take a while.

i was just saying that in a thread a little while ago.

while the humidity in your FC my be 100% the air around your cakes might not be as humid.

no fault of yours, did you dunk them after birthing?

and most definatly lose the pump. its litterally doing you no good/harm

mushies are weird in ways that one day you'll still never fully understand

@Bourndead - you are very right.

just taking a little bit of info and running with it isnt the way to go with this hobby..  If you cant give it the 150% good lovin it deserves you should probably just not haha!

i take better care of them than i do of myself most days

appreciate the input, ill take the cakes out and drill crazy more holes in the box, if i drill from the inside out then i shouldnt have to worry about plastic bits falling into my perlite, or should i also replace the perlite? maybe just rinse it after drilling?

I agree with Synocybin, cakes do take awhile sometimes. I had some cakes that i placed in the sgfc the same time as my other 2 cakes which pinned after 6 days while the others pinned in 2 weeks. Just give it some time and be patient :P Oh and i made the mistake of drilling more holes so i wouldn't do that but i did add some more perlite and the cakes that were already pinning grew a lot faster.

Take the cakes and perlite out.  Drill 1/4" holes every 2" ON ALL SIX SIDES.  Re-wet and strain your perlite and then put it back in the box (a small amount will fall through the holes in the bottom, but not much).  I would also re-dunk the cakes, but someone with more experience should weigh in on that.

you guys have no idea how much i appreciate all your help. right now im taking the perlite out and re wetting/straining it while i drill a second row of holes across the the top of the fc. Only reason i had the pump was because the FC is in a relatively enclosed space so theres no wind or breezes or promote FAE.

Once again i think all this is great advice but letting them sit till the 2 week mark then trying to change something is good too. Sometimes you just have to wait and let them do their own thing. If you're in a hurry though, none of this would have a negative impact. If your cakes feel light go ahead and re dunk them.

my main problem is that i work very long shifts at work so im not home to mist/fan 3 to 4 times a day, thats why i was using the perlite for the humidity and the pump to increase FAE. whats a newbie to do?

Build a SGFC to spec, thats what.
With a properly built SGFC(ie, 1/4" holes 2" apart on all 6 sides with 3-5" of hydrated and properly drained perlite) fanning and misting just 3-4 times a day is more than sufficient, provided you don't have the Heat/AC or a fan running constantly in the room. Understand that FAE is king of the pinning triggers homie, with the minimal amount of holes you've got going, along with that measly airpump plus fanning just 3-4times a day is gonna hurt your fruits in the long run. All those holes in the SGFC allow for ambient air exchange to take place all damn day, provided your FC is not couped up in a cabinet or something, and the fanning just helps displace any co2 that has built up, as well as aiding in the evaporation of moisture of the substrate, which is the number 1 pinning trigger.

And before you come back saying that you built your SGFC and now can't maintain humidity, let me stress that if it is indeed built to spec you are maintaining adequate humidity regardless of what your crap hygrometer is telling you, provided you aren't running the heat/ac or a fan in that room nonstop, as stated earlier.
