Why Cant We Teach The Deaf To Speak?
    #14245560 - 04/06/11 12:12 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

They do have great communication skills and ask any deaf person if they can do anything that a hearing person can do and they will all say that they can.

Soooo.  why can't they speak like a regular person?

I understand the conventional reasoning but given the fact that they can communicate just like the rest of us, they can also be taught to speak somewhat normally.

Are they just lazy?

Uhm, if you can't Hear the sound you're mispronouncing, how are you supposed to fix it?

A lot of deaf people can, but people who've been deaf since birth can't control the tone of their voice since they can't hear it.

Even people who weren't deaf from birth tend not to speak because they know it'll sound off so they're shy about it.

You're way over-analyzing this man.  If you think about it, a huge portion of language is learned through our surroundings early on.  By that I mean diction and other variations in speech that can only be truly known if they are heard.  To me it doesn't sound odd at all that a person who can not hear anything can't replicate a tone that has been passed down culturally.

Yea like everyone has already said, how do you know how to pronounce what you're saying when you can't hear it?
The only reason we understand pronunciation is because we can HEAR it.

Hence part of the definition of pronunciation relating to Dialect, which is all about how things sound as they are spoken. (NOT accent though it is related, however this doesn't' apply with deaf anyway, as they have no clue or idea what an accent is if they were deaf from birth)

It's done almost in the same way that people learn to sing..  People communicate upper and lower tones, more or less wind, tongue placement, jaw movement, nasal toning, mumbling.

It may take a word for word approach but common...

They're deaf.

you hear yourself partially through the bones in your head now ask
yourself, can deaf people hear themselves speak in any way?

if they cant hear those tones that you or they make then how will they
learn to speak, many that could speak prior to losing their hearing often
have a degraded ability to speak which is typically because they can only
hear themselves through the bones

Depends on their mode of deafness, but I assume that a deaf person can only hear through bone conduction if the cochlea and the connections to the brain are functional. I'm not sure what the most frequently occurring cause of complete deafness is.

A girl in grad school was completely deaf and spoke fine. For the first year it was a bit noticeable but in her 2nd year you'd never be able to tell. Deaf since birth. Very intelligent and spoke three languages. There's gotta be something more to it, or something she did linguistically akin to "singing lessons" or some such.

Not gonna ask her for the sake of this thread, but damn it was amazing.

Of course the speak.  We're discussing how they pronounce things and their dialect vs someone who isn't deaf.

The thing I have wondered, are there different 'levels' of being deaf?  Like where you can still hear certain vibrational ranges and everything is just mumblerumble sound or if it's complete silence, etc.

I understand Marlee Matlin better than I understood this guy I was in the Army with.

And yeah, there's different levels and kinds of deafness.

if you never have heard the tone or melody, or note your supposed to say something in, how can you replicate it...that's why when a deaf person talks its all, Hawwwy Heowww yee Doian (hey how yeah doin")

even tho they cant hear they can tell they are pronouncing words differently

im sure they can tell INSTANTLY when they start talking if someone notices

just by body language which they tend to pay more attention to
