how about socially challenged/conditioned people who replace real life relationships by creating an internet personality and interacting with others like themselves on websites like these...shut-in's i guess you may call them?
what is it about a person that brings them to become emotionally attached to their "alter-ego" that they have created via the internet? example: profiles that you can personalize with quotes, avatars, so on and so forth...

That might work except for one thing. Those people are not an actual group. They don't have a secret handshake or all wear purple robes. That, and it is impossible to tell much about the person on the other end of the monitor without making gross and likely false assumptions.

Why are you antagonizing him so much?

i am not trying to antagonize him haha
i actually really appreciate a well rounded debate, and he seems not to be afraid to voice his opinions, which is most certainly necessary for a good discussion haha
but i would say that the same gross assumptions you make about the shut-in's would be similar to the gross assumptions made about those spiritual robe wearing folk.
we know as much about them as we do the people on this site...
anyway, it is not an assumption to say that the people who regularly visit this site are related in that they all come to this site. THIS is their group.
to add a little bit to the discussion, i think that people may end up here for different reasons, both good and bad.
i think the internet is a place that people feel safe voicing their opinions, because of course they have the security in knowing that most likely their 'real' identity may never be discovered...though to us, your 'real' identity is that which you present across these forums.
maybe the forums are used in a way that you may build confidence here to apply in real life situations? so that you might not be afraid to voice your real thoughts when you encounter a person instead of only on this website.

Seeing as how I participated in Civil Rights Marches and faced off the US Navy and associated death threats to get a Conscientious Objector discharge, I have never been afraid to stand up for what I believed in the face of danger.

haha i know man, i don't mean you!
i appreciate your discussions.
i guess there's probably a lot more adolescent internet surfers who fit my description, but there are definitely a lot of kids on this site who are very quick to draw arms when they feel their point of view has been insulted.
i like to give another point of view in your posts because it seems as if sometimes you post and people just automatically agree with you...i don't see that to be the point of a philosophy forum, these topics are up for debate and that is where the fun lies, in debate.
that is sweet you stood up for your rights, but you don't need me to tell you that man!

how about pompous individuals with superiority complexes who have the audacity to insult other groups of people as if the word prejudice was a brand of breakfast cereal? or maybe, you could talk about how some people think they've figured it all out, so they regurgitate their biased opinions as rhetorical questions in order to entice an intellectual debate about something they think they've completely understood when, in fact, they did't and already had an opinion from the start, completely negating any real purpose of conversation at all.

Hey man, lighten up a little. If you really find OC's debate style irritating, then just avoid discussions with him. But this kind of "argument" isn't going to get you anywhere.

Funny that he's calling OC pompous.

I would but that has been done to death. I am looking for some fresh unchartered territory. Some group that I have yet to offend. Any gay, totem-worshipping Eskimos here?
