I thought that at first but I changed my mind because the caps seemed quite thick and it hadn't deliquesced at all.
Is this not relevant for all of the species in those genera?

It is relevant, but just because it does not deliquesce doesn't mean that it is Psathyrella.

thanks - i'm thinking a field guide could be helpful in light of the fact that my camera is inadequate for some of the close ups

heh..never thought I'd actually need one though..I guess when there are lethal mushrooms around it becomes less of a fun hobby..more empirical

You definitely need a camera that has macro mode. Good ones can be as cheap as $25 on ebay or craigslist.
You don't need a field guide, the internet will always be better than any book for identifying mushrooms.

The mushroom never came from that cluster - he found it to the right.
I'm not disputing that it's a Coprinellus, though. I thought it was at first but changed my mind.

NEVER!
Lethal mushrooms are some of the most exciting to find imo, just don't eat em.
Plus some of the deadly Amanita sp are beautiful

Looks like it could be Lacrymaria.
