Edible forays (lots of pictures) Napa Valley.
    #14241026 - 04/05/11 10:21 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Thought I'd share some of the better photos from the last couple edible mushroom forays.  I know I can't be the only one who just likes looking at mushrooms in general - pics or otherwise!
That is, until I eat them.  :crazy2:

General habitat is California live oak, Manzanita, and Bay Laurel.  You can find a few California Buckeye and Madrone if you look around hard enough.

Some of the local inhabitants, at least the ones I see frequently.

And the real reason I go, the fungus -  :mushroomtwirl::mushroomtwirl::mushroomtwirl:

Lepista nuda (Blewit)

Pleurotus ostreatus

Hericium ramosum
I love eating this stuff - this guy was deep inside a hollowed out log.

Ganoderma applanatum
This guy was HUGE perhaps 20 inches long.

Russula cyanoxantha

Amanita velosa

Cantharellus californicus
Still finding these guys as late as April 3rd.  But they are getting pretty dry now.

I took Alan's advice, and saved all my spore laden wash-water from the last haul I brought home.  I took it out this weekend to a very nice habitat that was absent of Chanterelle.  I hope in a few years I can change that - I spread the spore-water all around the oaks there.  Thanks for the tip Alan!

:amanita2: And the haul(s) :amanita2:

Thanks for looking folks, hope your hunts have been equally successful!:mushdance:

Yep, Grisette (specifically Amanita constricta).  Thanks for the comments and complements!

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

The only thing more plentiful than the mushrooms are the grapes.  Wines the name of the game 'round here.  :smirk:

The camping area is not nearly so nice as the park itself.  That said, I have spent a few nights out there - just not with permission.  Stealth camping can be fun!

Thanks bud, they are my favorite for sure.  Such a delicious score.. Too bad thier season is so damn short (few weeks, then they are gone around here).

I found a large patch of them (too late) this year.  About 45 feet out in the middle of a field.  A huge oak was off in the distance that they were mycorrhizal with.  I have read that they can be upwards of 60 feet from thier host tree - just had not seen it until now.

Needless to say, Ill be hitting that patch earlier next year.  There were over a dozen large rotting velosa there, spread out along the extended root-line.  :frown:

Thanks!  Not a bug or a hopper in that beauty.  I was surprised to find it out there in March.  I usually find tons during November/December.  Not so much now in spring.  Especially in natural habitat like that.
