lol but a lot of engineering is report writing. do you think you'll be miserable as an ee? there are a lot of jobs within engineering that can be quite miserable... what are you interested in?

there ya go, I laid in bed my freshman year one night thinking college wasn't for me neither dude but sitting in a room on sunny days listening to some old bastard lecture isn't for anyone, degrees are earned not just given, they suck trudging through but after you get over the 60 credit hump, you realize how it's not so bad and you're already on your way out their door. You like that run on?

Report writing =/= essay writing. Both suck, but reports are BY FAR the lesser of the two.
Overall though, yes, definitely would be miserable. I've worked in the telecom the last 3 summers and it's been obscenely boring, beyond anything I could ever imagine having to do.
I want to enjoy my job, not just not be miserable.

FUCK SCHOOL SELL CRACK!
But if you don't think school is your thing, take a break and then if you enjoy not being at school and just working than, I guess school isn't your thing. Or if while on a break you begin to think you should go back to school or you miss school, than simply go back to school.
You live your life now (im assuming you recently got out of high school) there is no right or wrong way to do it only the way YOU want to do it so do it that way. I dropped out of school after one semester and its fucking awesome. IMO, work is more rewarding because you get paid for your time and school (especially in todays world) seems like a real gamble. You pay a HUGE sum of money for something that might help you land a job, if you can find one. I've met too many college grads who are working lesser quality or same quality jobs that I work now. I'de rather work and get paid guarantee than go to school HOPING to get paid X and work at Y job... only to find out four years later when I'm graduated with a degree and have all this debt to pay I'm back and stuck at where I was in high school.
If you end up not liking school and not liking the working world there's always the military. I'm still thinking about joining a branch.
Just keep yourself in mind. You. Do what YOU want to do! You can always start back up again. Take a semester off, just don't let your self get lazy because that can change your mind. Deep down you may want to go to school but if your lazy you wont. DO WHAT A NIGGA WANTS TA DO.

All trades (such as the ones you mentioned) will become obsolete, some faster than others. Technology advances and suddenly you're twenty years into your career and there's no work for you to do.

eh... i doubt we'll see that in our lifetime... lol
in fact i think we're more likely to see somewhat of a technological step back in this country. i really can't imagine this incredibly flimsy and inefficient system of global trade getting very much larger. i believe in order to save humanity we're going to have to shrink back into local scale manufacturing.
furthermore people still value hand made goods over machine made.
people still need welders because we've already replace people with machines in the welding industry as best we can. machines aren't versatile enough.
people will still need plumbers... robotics isn't advanced enough to develop a robot plumber.
in short i think your 20 year prediction is a wee bit inflated. maybe closer to 120 years.

I Agree, I can't see technology advancing at the rate it has been for much longer, especially to the point where those trades become completely obsolete.

It wasn't a prediction, it was arbitrary.
Think about what happened to carriage makers when the automobile was invented. There's no way to know what we'll come up with next, and we have no idea how many new technologies will make other, older technologies obsolete.

so you're saying that you think there will be a new better way to make two separate pieces of metal into one solid, coherent object that will replace welding? its possible i suppose, but what in the world is gonna replace plumbing?
i don't see plumbing changing very much from what we have now other than new materials and better design. but that would never make plumbers obsolete.
i could see a lot of electricians losing work though, once wireless energy technology hits the mainstream, and becomes efficient and cost effective. Tesla was right people! we already have wireless internet and wireless phones. wireless electricity is on the way.

Lol yeah seriously, in our lifetime I highly doubt we'll see wireless power replace wired power in the whole. That is INCREDIBLY unrealistic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_energy_transfer
i didn't really read that article. but it would more than likely be radiative energy transfer, like how our star powers our planet.
edt; seems the article talks a bit about energy induction. which reminds me... thats exactly how a transformer works. one wire coil produces a magnetic field via circulating current and the other wire coil picks the field up without touching. seems really low range and kind of like a frill if implement in a consumer product more than anything really practical.
