Information on bungee jumping
    #14239949 - 04/05/11 01:59 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I'm looking to go bungee jumping and can't find much information on it.

It's looks like you just need a full body harness, a cord, a strap to hold the cord between your ankles and a secondary rope to climb back up. Thinking something like this for the cord:

http://www.amazon.com/100-FT-Shock-Cord-BLK/dp/B001P5W886/ref=sr_1_27?ie=UTF8&m=A3442RE7GLYYY5&s=generic&qid=1301988318&sr=1-27

http://www.amazon.com/Solid-Rubber-Shock-Bungee-included/dp/B001KZZ6AS/ref=sr_1_43?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1301988059&sr=1-43

http://cgi.ebay.com/Bungie-Nylon-coated-rubber-rope-shock-cord-1-2-x-150-/280653999787?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4158482eab

But I'm not 100% sure those are right. I've seen where cords 5/8's will have a breaking strength of ~300 pounds, which I'm hoping means that it won't break until ~600 pounds.

A 200 pound guy jumping 50 feet is going to create several hundred pounds of pressure - but that's providing deceleration is instantaneous. Since a bungee cord gradually slows you, I'm thinking the most pressure exerted might be around 300 pounds. Does anyone know anything about this? I plan on jumping over water, but from high enough up that falling could seriously hurt / kill me.

I want to connect the cord a couple places on the harness, but I don't know if it is possible / safe to try and wrap 2 cords. Wrapping the cords would shorten the deceleration time and increase friction / tangle risk.

Does 1/2 or 3/8 seem thick enough to not break?

A man taking a free bungee jump died because the balloon turned out to be 70-feet too low. William Brotherton, 20, took the plunge in Arvada, Colorado, from a tethered hot-air balloon over a field. He was taking a free jump in exchange for testing equipment.

For Brotherton not to have hit the ground, the balloon needed to be 260 feet in the air; but it was hovering at 190 feet. The ground crew were shouting and trying to warn the pilot that it was too low. A report by the North American Bungee Association said that Bungee America wasn't insured or licensed by the state, ignored safety standards and should have been using radios for contact

.

Rule 1: ensure rope is shorter than the distance between point A (the ground) and point B ( the jumping platform)

Happy jumping

So I thought I should ask a group of randoms on a drug related forum on what safety procedures I should follow.

Of course I don't have 'proper training' - that's why I'm doing research.

I'm not worried about the cord length, I'm worried about it breaking, or not being stretchy enough so that it hurts when you reach the end. I think if you jump outward, instead of straight down, this would be less of an issue - there is actually a sport called rope jumping where the cord doesn't even stretch and you basically just swing:

I really don't think it's that dangerous if you do everything right - just want to be damn sure I'm doing everything right

Some things are worth taking the time to learn from somebody with experience, first hand.  Particularly when they involve jumping from cliffs.

Haha for real. I remember watching a video of this college kid who bungee jumped off a building. They measured the cord and everything but they forgot to factor in the fact that bungee cords stretch so he splatted into the ground head first like an egg.

I've bungee jumped in Whistler when I went to Canada a few years ago. I did it through a licensed company and feel that if you're going to jump off a ledge in the hope of having a cord save your life, its better to trust a qualified professional instead of half assing it your self.

There are different cords for different weights. The more you weigh the stronger and less 'bouncy' the cord needs to be.

Srs dude. Do some proper research before jumping. You wont regret it.
