Crushed Lime
    #1424169 - 04/02/03 09:19 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

This guy I know has used hydrated lime in his casings before, and was wondering if there was any benefit to crushing it before adding. Thanks for any help with this.

That hot tub shot is over the top, but please don't remove it. Anyhow, point well taken.

My ferrets use hydrated lyme flour, just make sure you add it into your casing mix very slowly as it can easily become too alkaline. You want to create a ph of about 7, mix up all of your casing ingrigients, the slowly add hydrated lime, mix and check acidity with litmus strips. My ferrets use a ph soil tester that can be found at lowes or home depot for under 15 dollars. Keep repeating util you get to seven. Also Groung oyster shells work well as a buffer against acidity since they are not water souable, but will react with the natural acids that mycellium and mushies produce and keep the ph down in the long run

This guy was thinking about grinding his lime, and thanks you for your advice. He'll probably see if there is anything more to the process of making the flour, but will definitely pick up some litmus. Thanks.

You want to create a ph of about 7

Stamets says to set up your casing material to a pH of 6.8 to 7.2 for cubies, but my friend has tried various casings with a starting pH of 7 through 8 and he found that right around 8 seems to work best. By the third flush, the pH of the casing material drops to about 6.5, lower if he leaves out the crushed oyster shells.

Is that just creating an extra buffer zone?
Doesn't that increase in alkaline cause any problems?

Buffering is setting up a condition in a substance such that it will resist a change in pH. Adding lime changes the pH immediately then stops working so it doesn't buffer. Adding crushed oyster shells, which break down over time, has little immediate effect on the pH but over time it counters the mycelium's long-term effort to drive the pH down.

My friend has good results so far...
