Hillbilly = too fast. (**GET YOUR PRINTS**)
    #14241648 - 04/05/11 12:25 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Anyone else have their Hillbilly strain take off?!

They colonized super fast (BRF tek).. almost too fast for my liking.  Only 2-3 of the 10 jars are at 100%, but all of them have completely colonized the dry verm layer.  Also, about 7 of them have 5-10 pins growing from the dry verm layer.  They weren't treated any different than my previous jars which were created months before and still haven't started pinning in the chamber.

Not sure what to do with them.. I am going to go research it now.

What do you guys think?  I'm assuming I should just let them keep pinning even though they haven't hit 100%, but should I let them sit for the entire consolidation period or birth them early?

You can only see 2 and almost 3 of the pins in this picture, but there are truly 6 visible from that angle (and they continue all the way around the dry verm layer!

it will fruit in the jar if you don't birth it.

After searching the forums I think I've decided to start dunking the ones that are 100%, and I will leave the others in the jar until they hit 100% (which shouldn't be more than a day or two).

And closed veil, check your :pm:!

i dont think any companies sell hillbilly spores. i got mine from the marketplace.

the strain thread says:
"Discovered in Alabama. Isolated by and named after Hillbilly, the guy who found the first specimen."

I just did a little research. Hillbilly says the strain is from Arkansas, not Alabama. Not that you necessarily care.
Sounds like a great strain. It's been around for at least 5 years or longer; I wonder why it hasn't become more widespread?

pins before 100% colonization is either contams. or parts of the substrate are too compact to be colonized. (the reason agar provides 2 dimensional growth)

compacted substrates are a result of using the wrong jars (which you are)

1) what's wrong with the jars he's using?

2) and i'm sure he knows how do make PF cakes without compacting the sub.

koolaid, with what you said about the sub being to compact is this more of a BRF thing or can it happen with rye berries? The reason I ask is because I recently switched from BRF to rye berries. One of the more common things to me is the pinning before being full colonized. Thanks in advance.

rye jars should only be filled about 2/3 of the way so u can shake the jars. totally different monster then PF cakes.

I am not.  I probably would have if it was another strain (like my B+'s, as they grew super slow) but this Hillbilly is just dominating.  I feel if I leave it in the jar too long I will be wasting those fruits.

All of these jars are almost at 100% today.  I'm going to leave the ones that aren't pinning to consolidate until they do pin, but the ones that are pinning I'm going to go ahead and dunk tomorrow! =)

I traded for them from a member of the Shroomery.

I will write everyone's name down in this thread who would like a print/syringe and will hit you up when I have prints.

I'd say this is legit, but all of my other jars did fine.  I've made them all using the same technique.  I did pack a few of my first B+ jars too tightly but they still colonized without much a problem.. it just slowed way down in the last 10%.  My guess is that the same thing happened here, where it slowed down at the last 10% but the top was already 100% colonized and started to fruit.  The more compact area still colonizes fine in my experience.

Upon looking today they are all almost 100% now.  It's ridiculous how fast they're growing!

I'm nervous about not allowing them the consolidation week, but I figure if I fruit those pins now I can at least get a print to have another shot at it.

I'm using the tall half-pints.  I haven't had a problem thus far, although my pinning on EQ/B+ seem to be a lot less than people I've seen with the short jars.  This could be due to my fruiting chamber, though.

I compacted a few of my first jars ever a bit too much, but they still did fine.  Since then I've figured out how to correctly set them.

i like the shorties too. they can hold more weight and support larger fruits. but the tall one's work just fine.

^ Many thanks!

Also, I flip my tall half-pint jars and smack them against my hand in order to allow the mycelium to better colonize the more compact part of substrate.  It seems that with short jars this step isn't necessary.

As well, I've read many reports (although I've never had them myself) of PE being very slow.

Many good vibes to you and your Penis!

You've been added to the print list!
