A man believed to be armed with a .357 Magnum handgun and considered suicidal surrendered to police outside of Boulder Community Hospital at about 7 p.m., putting an end to a lengthy standoff that blocked traffic and diverted ambulances. The hospital remains open, and streets around the facility, including Broadway and Balsam Drive, have reopened. Traffic was backed up for hours. According to Boulder Community Hospital spokesman Rich Sheehan, a doctor approached hospital security around 3:15 p.m. today to report seeing a man sitting down outside the northeast corner of the building looking distraught. Hospital employees said the man, identified as a 21-year-old, then pulled out a gun, put it in his mouth and pulled the trigger, Sheehan said. "But nothing happened," Sheehan said. "The gun didn't go off."
At about 3:20 p.m., a female friend of the man called police and told dispatchers that the man was suicidal and that he was armed with a handgun outside the hospital, police said. Police have said they believe the gun was a large .357 Magnum Boulder SWAT negotiators talk to a suspect outside Boulder Community Hospital who was believed to have a handgun and was considered suicidal. (Phil McMichael / Camera) handgun. It's unclear whether the gun was loaded.
The man was peacefully taken into custody about 7 p.m, arrested and taken to Boulder County Jail, where he will be evaluated for mental health issues, according to police. His name has not been released. No one was injured in the ordeal and the man never threatened anyone, police said.
“Our goal was to resolve this situation peacefully,” said Greg Testa, Boulder's deputy chief of police. “It was the best possible outcome, and we're pleased that the suspect will now be able to get the help he needs.”
The man faces misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and unlawful carrying of a concealed weapon.
Despite initial dispatch reports that the gunman had entered the hospital, Sheehan said the suspect was outside the entire time, where he could be seen with a brown jacket draped over his midsection. The hospital was not evacuated, although ambulances were being diverted to other hospitals. The hospital continued to accept walk-in emergency room patients. Officers with rifles and handguns were positioned around the front entrance of the hospital, with guns drawn and pointed toward the northeast corner of the facility, just east of the facility's front doors. Many of the officers on scene were fitted with bulletproof vests and holding police shields. Investigators were talking to a woman who was acquaintance of the gunman outside the hospital, although she appeared to faint and was taken inside the building through the emergency room doors on a gurney. Linda Hamilton, who works in the hospital's scheduling department, said she received an email before 4 p.m. warning employees that there was a “Code Amber” in the doctor's parking lot and to stay away from that area. She said a Code Amber just implies that there is a security incident. Hamilton said she left the hospital around 4:30 p.m. because that's when her shift ended, and she saw kitchen employees standing outside as she exited. “Just the kitchen was evacuated,” she said. This isn't the first time police have been involved in a standoff at Boulder Community Hospital. In 2008, an officer shot and killed Terrance Baughman, 32, of Boulder, after he entered the hospital, sat in a wheelchair in the emergency-room lobby and threatened to detonate a bomb using an oxygen tank. Linda Maldonado, who also works in the scheduling department for the hospital, said she was off work when that incident happened three years ago and she didn't feel threatened by this afternoon's standoff. “But I think people who went through all of that would be more scared of today's incident,” Maldonado said. Balsam was shut down between Broadway and Ninth Street, and Broadway was closed between Cedar and Alpine avenues.

i've always wondered if people who fail at committing suicide just hate themselves more afterward.
one time while tripping i was thinking about how fragile life is and how the dumbest shit can end it instantly.
think about it, what if one day youre just walking down the street and a sniper shoots you in the head. you wouldnt even know you died. it would be like watching a movie and suddenly it just shuts off. but that movie is your life.
within 5 feet of you, im 100% sure you have more than enough resources to ensure death. its just so easy to do. if the guy really wanted to die, all he would have had to do is point the gun at a police officer. even if it wasnt loaded.
