What is the best way to go about this?
Right now I run 5 miles a day and then lift some weights.

I don't know how often your'e lifting weights or anything, but in general, you should never work the same groups of muscles everyday. Recovery is a huge part to gaining strength/muscle. Diet is very important too, making sure you are fueling your body with good carbs and protein which will improve performance and recovery. Depending on the type of weight lifting your doing, you might not lose weight, it will just shift from fat weight to muscle weight. Contrary to what most people think though, weight lifting will burn more calories in the long run than cardio due to the fact that your skeletal muscles will consume large amounts of ATP. It is kind of a loaded question, there is no single right answer, but I will say a good diet will give you more energy and stamina to train harder. Good luck reaching your goals

the fatlass programs I have seen concentrate on one goal at a time. First they allow you to lose fat by burst cardio followed by a weightlifting fatloss workout.
After you have gone through fatloss 1 and 2 and possibly 3 depending how fat you are, then you go on to build strength through a series of hypertrophy programs and strength programs.
It really takes time. Its very possible but it wont happen immediatly.

Losing weight and gaining muscle.
All depends on what your state is now. If your incredibly over weight, id run more, if your not, dont run. Running for a long period of time depletes muscle. What im saying is if your just average, not fat, not skinny. Running alot would be a bad thing to do if you want to gain muscle.

Thats what im talking about. If you want to build muscle, slow down your cardio hugely. If you want to lose weight, up cardio and up reps.

I was reading somewhere that one pound of muscle burns 35 calories an hour while 1 pound of fat only burns 5 calories an hour. I'm not sure if I am quoting that correctly, but I am pretty sure that is what I read.
SO...I would definitely encourage you to gain muscle in order to lose weight. Make sure that you have potassium and protein in your diet. Very essential for muscle and overall health.
The thing about dieting is that you shouldn't necessarily eat less. It is important to eat well balanced meals throughout the day. Variety is important. Balance is important.
Make sure that you stay active, too. A nice mix of cardio and weight lifting should get you to where you want to be.

"Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded." -Abraham Lincoln
