If i were to make a 4ft by 4ft by 10 in deep azure bed this spring and had enough colonized woodchip spawn to fill it. Could i immediately case over it with peat adding grass seed to the top and skip covering it with cardboard until fall ?

Will grass seed grow on peat?
(Edit- I know nothing about azures but your basic idea seems sound.)

I don't know if you're suppose to case azures. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt.

OK. I was hoping for a definitive answer. I went and put some peat in a flower pot and grass seeds grew so that question is now answered. Anybody ever try this....someone here must have.

Keep it to under 6" in depth, and case it with topsoil from the area, not peat. Also, bark and sawdust is better than chips. Mix some chips in, but when the whole bed is chips, it does poorly. RR

You can use bug netting to cover your wood chip/ saw dust beds to keep the humidity in during colonization too

I would like to thank everyone for their input and links because i've already put a pretty good amount of research into this and any help is appreciated. So I put in my "stealth beds" in every location that i found suitable and it looks very stealthy to say the least. I also took RR's advice and kept them under 6 inches and cased with existing soil.....so here's the next question.....I made 5 tubs of wood chip spawn all weighing approx 40-50 lbs and one of the tubs got a bit of green mold forming on about 20 chips on the top(i realize there are spores everywhere now in the tub).I just wanted to know if i can still use this spawn or just toss it? Also where can i buy bark ?
