yea snails and slugs mainly eat fungus don't they? So why haven't all the wild ones gotten me sick? The difference is that theres alot more slug/snail traffic over my sub that I'd like.

I have a friend that got bacterial meningitis. After having a head ache for days he went to the hospital because of the head ache. They diagnosed him with meningitis and asked him if he had eaten any raw vegetables that could have come into contact with slugs or snails and the other known sources and since he hadn't eaten any other known carriers of the bacteria they said it was most likely the vegetables he ate from the garden that a snail or slug had left a trail on and hadn't been cooked. The trail they leave is almost impossible to wash off and it also has the bacteria present since it is secreted from the carrier of the bacteria.
Long story short, my friend almost died. They had to put a tube directly into his heart and slowly pump a gel medicine for a half hour directly into his heart three times a day for two or three months before he started to feel even slightly better and he still doesn't feel the same years later.
Eat what you want to, I was just putting out the info for the guy with slug problems. If you do eat something with a snail or slug trail on it and you get a bad head ache that won't go away I would suggest the hospital.

It's a good thing to be aware of, 3n1gm4, not knocking you for posting the info. In that case, I guess any vegetable or fruit grown outside and above ground, and eaten uncooked, could carry that risk. I guess it's one of those issues that you can choose to worry about, or not.
I'm nearly a veggie (+seafood), so I eat lots of raw stuff like that. I think I'd worry more about food contams if I ate beef, pork, chicken, etc., given the shoddy way they're often stored and prepared. OTOH seafood has its own risks.
Good tip about the headaches though.

cheers for the info everyone. Yea good point. It doesn't seem to be worth the risk. I have some more grain jars that are growing. Might just stick to indoor growing. I know what I'm doing there. will just wait for them. Cos my sub is covered with slime so not worth it. Might just grow them for some photos though.

I'm going to spawn some Ps. cyans in my garden this weekend, and my garden is always full of snails and slugs after a rain
I guess I think it's worth the risk

If you decide not to eat them at least you could take some prints?

this would solve the problem huh? Cos I had 10 jars inoculated but all got contaminated. I didn't realize but my pressure cooker seal was dud so they didn't get sterilized. So annoying. So my backyard grow is the only one on the go atm. Seal is on its way so I can clone one. Hopefully it shows up soon so I still have some good pins growing I can use. Otherwise I would have to clone from some old as myc from agar dishes witch I wanna avoid cos its started fruiting its so old.
Hurry up seal.
Would anyone else eat a mushroom casarol that was originally covered in slime? Couldn't imagine it would be any different that field mushrooms?

I've currently got doctors running in circles cluelessly. Tmj problems, nope, ear infections, nope, sinus problems, nope, skull fractures, nada. The headaches are so intense. I'm on tramadol and anti inflammatory now and barely managing with the stomach pain from all that.. Is bacterial infection of the brain/skull commonly caused by mispracticing mycology? Or eating contaminated fruits off the ground...

wow that doesn't sound good man. I tell your doctors that you grow mushrooms and that could be a reason. If it helps their diagnosis its worth it.
