SCIENCE EXPERIMENT! i took what i could salvage from a contaminated cake and made a mini terrarium for it out of a strawberry container. Surprisingly is had all the traits of a successful terarrarium. It isnt much cake, but hopefully something will fruit from it. Dunked and rolled, this is more for fun than anything. Hopefully i get something, that you guys think?

Day 2
There appears to be some sort of fuzzy mycellium growing. This may be a good sign. Updates to come.

Day 3
The white fuzz is presumably mycellium, the fact that in just 2 days it has gotten noticeably bigger is a good sign. My original design was just a strawberry container with perlite but due to a lack of humidity i have tucked the container into a plastic ziplock bag which is left open for air exchange. Due to the slight indent on the strawberry containers lid, as well as holes (for freshness of berry's i guess) I have devised a way to keep them humid. I pour some water into this indent which acts as somewhat of a reservoir, i then apply pressure to the bag covering the lid and the water level increases until it is flush with the holes with causes some water to drip into the container. After using this humidification method i can now see condensation within the container which means it must have done something. Hopefully you can see the texture of the mycellium forming, assuming its mycellium.

Update It appears that hyphal knots are forming on the 2 larger chunks of cake. I noticed that growth is stronger where the chunk was touching the side of the container and couldn't understand why. I then remembered that the water drips against the container side and realized that the rest of the chunks may not be getting enough water. I am going to start misting the chunks and will post a picture as soon as it is relevant.

so when you misted and fanned, did you actually open it up, or just mist/fan through the openings since there's so much open area?

Well actually i havent been misting, i know i should have been though. The thing is is that i dont have a mister. Instead i have been dripping water through the lid. But yheah when im fanning i open it right up and use my hand to fan it out. I really should get a mister, its not like this is the only time im going to need one.

Dunno about there, but here a 6oz spray bottle at Walmart was less than a buck. Got some peroxide for about $0.50 too. Put a little H2O2 in your spray bottle, then fill with water and mist with the dilute peroxide solution. From what I hear, that'll keep humidity up by misting AND help reduce chances of contam.

bad advice. h2o2 should only be used for cobweb mold and will damage the yummy kind of myc as well as the bad.

Thanks trippysmurf, i have reason to believe DC is fucking with me so its very possible he purposely gave me bad advice. Water in a spray bottle seems to be the way to go.

I don't think DC was fucking with you in that instance. It would be silly to give bad advice on purpose in a forum like this. Because it'll be refuted in 60 seconds anyway.

This may be a stupid question but obviously those weren't 100% colonized but how long were they colonizing for after you inc'ed them?
I ask as SWIM has one or two cakes that may have an issue much like you had. Not contam (or at least I don't think so) like you had to deal with but just growth that has slowed due to what I think is iffy spores...or just something he messed up
SWIMs are just over two weeks and about 50%....

Man, really if you can WAIT be patient. These cakes were 100% colonized once i birthed them, only not 100% colonized with myc there was some other bad shit. I just cut out the bad shit. I assume this same principal could be applied to not fully colonized cakes if u get rid of everything that isnt colonized but man i really would just be patient. It took about a month to fully colonize. If you absolutely have to though you could prolly just cut out the bad stuff.

He has the intention to wait...just trying to plan in case something comes up! Thanks for the advice though!

Day 13
So I have very thin stems and white fuzzy myc growth on the base of the stems. According to my research this is due to excess co2 in my "chamber", also the thin stems could be due to not misting at all. I have combated both of those issues by opening the bag i used for humidity and beginning to mist them. Quite unreal how fast they grow though.
