Can I make this work for Oysters?
    #14237798 - 04/04/11 06:47 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Ok. So I saw this post and got inspired, and wanted to try it.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14165712

Problem is that here in Hawaii it is damn near impossible to find straw. (No wheat farms in Hawaii)And I know that I still have a lot of reading and research to do to put this project together. But from what I have read, it seems like oysters will eat and colonize a wide variety of substrates.

How here is what I have available:

That is "Green Waste" from the local waste transfer facility. Its a conglomeration of yard waste ranging from branches and leaves, to lawn clippings and compost. They let it sit around until it gets partially broken down, then its free for the public to haul it off and put back in their yard. Its free and seems like there is an unlimited supply. Any imput on whether this can be used? Ive also heard newspaper an cardboard will work, though I havent found that tek yet.

Feedback?

EDIT: Forgot to mention that it would have to be an outdoor grow. All I have is a small studio, no room inside.

Off the top of my head I see two possible problems with the substrate. The leaves and lawn clippings may add too much nitrogen causing increased contamination. The compost may give the substrate too dense a consistency once water is added. Only one way to find out, give it a try.

Have you tried looking for sugarcane bagasse? Makawao Mushroom Farm on Maui grows Oysters on bagasse. Here is a video
