I want to fruit an oyster mushroom laundry basket outdoors, but am unsure of the temp range for fruiting oysters- It's still cold and temps are in the mid 40's F.. The temp in the morning when I have to set it out has been high 30's F. ... Is this too cold?

Hmm that sounds pretty cold! Im no good with Fahrenheit but ive just been tryna fruit my basket of blue oyster outside in about 5-10C and after two(ish) weeks of being out there (with three weeks colonising inside before hand) its pinning nicely now, if not a little slow.. Hope that helps

Oysters will survive those temps but they won't fruit until it gets a little warmer.

According to a couple popular mushroom cultivation books I have, there are different strains of oysters that do well in different temperatures. What sort of oyster are you growing?
If you have a cold weather strain of oysters, you might be able to fruit them, even though it does sound pretty cold. My understanding is that lower temperatures, while slowing growth, tend to produce better quality mushrooms.

P ostreatus will fruit in those temps. In the cascades, I pick them in April and May when it still frosts every night, then gets into the 40s and 50s during the day. RR

Thanks RR.. I have made a little hoop greenhouse out of PVC and clear plastic that I think will work for the oyster basket.. The temps should be good, plenty of ventilation, very roomy and if I can't keep it humidified naturally, then I will stick a humidifier in there. Looking forward to trying it out..
