Oh my bad - sorry.
I was talking to pwn - he said he wasn't interested in his field nor felt like he learned anything.
I don't know if he was exaggerating or cheated a lot but learning is necessary to get a electrical engineering degree.

Ultimately in the workplace, most people apply close to NONE of the specific skills and knowledge they learned in school.
Degrees are basically proof that you are capable of learning, problem solving, and self-motivation. How many jobs have you started and known exactly how to do the job with zero training? I'm going to guess none.
Depending on the degree, and the effort the person put in, these skills will have been learned to a different extent. In general, however, an engineer is FORCED to a higher standard than, say, a philosophy major. Not to say that a philosophy major can't have honed their skills to the same level, but they weren't forced by extremely demanding classes to do so.
Thus, from an employer's perspective, when he has the philosophy major and the engineer as his choices, he has a higher chance of getting a more capable employee from an engineering background than from a philosophy background.
This is all from my experience anyways, and I'm obviously not talking about specific fields such as nursing, or law, etc. The skills you need for most jobs are learned on the job, and so taking two people with minimal experience, the person with the higher chance of having higher potential is a better candidate.

I was being a little facetious - I learned a lot of math and a good deal about circuit analysis, but IME working in the industry for the past 3 summers the workplace is a lot more practical and a lot less theoretical, and thus I feel that it should have been a lot more project based than theory based. Just my opinion.

You absolutely learn more in the field than the classroom - the question is, can you get into the field without first completing the classroom component?

Im a psych major and a B.A in psych seems pointless unless i go to graduate school. School also costs me about 20k a year. Learning feels like a chore. I am scared to drop out though since society has taught us that college is needed. If i drop out i plan to learn real estate and work on websites, photography, and art in addition to a starter job. Is there anybody here on the Shroomery that has dropped out and made a good living for themselves?
Sorry If this has been said I don't have time to read through 4 pages of responses..but going into real estate right now is not a good idea at all. The real estate market is absolutely terrible and its not going to improve anytime soon.

Go to a much less expensive college.
Like - go to community college until you can figure out where you want to go for a real degree.
If I can advise you on anything: I'd advise you go into a trade.
Trade of choice being a water/wastewater treatment plant operator.

a lot of people that tell you you don't need a degree are out of their minds. maybe 25 years ago you could get away with doing research or engineering without a degree, but not anymore. you won't get an opportunity to gain experience in these fields without a degree, even if you teach yourself an prove you know it, no one will hire you. maybe the system is fucked up and it shouldn't be this way, but personally it benefits me so i can't complain. less people with science degrees means i get more $ for doing shit that i find incredibly interesting.

I disagree with most of the sentiments in this thread.
If you're smart and more importantly motivated, you'll make it no matter what. Just cause you don't go to university doesn't mean you'll be at the bottom of the food chain.
Open a business, learn the construction trade, become a contractor, tons of stuff you can do. Flip houses, the list goes on.
thats interesting. i'm about to finish a bs in me but i fucking love every minute of it. i'm a lazy student with poor performance but i enjoy engineering school and everything that it has taught me.
i think what happened is you fucked up. you went for engineering because you didn't really understand what it was (like most everyone else entering engineering school) but you were never cut out for it to begin with. but never the less you were attracted to the prestige and salary. what did you expect? the curriculum is torturous as it is but without any passion i just don't understand how thats even possible to do...

I went for engineering because I wasn't really interested in anything in particular, didn't want to write essays, and engineering is the most versatile degree you can get IMO.

After a lot of thinking i have decided to continue my education because in the end a college degree, even one with a subpar gpa, is better than nothing at all. Gotta survive especially in the way things are going now.
