well it seems you are more knowledgable on the topic then i am, so i'll defer to your opinion. I've just got a student level understanding of things at current and have no experience or anything.

i just assumed that they would be held to provide their financial positions in an understandable and accurate manner, but it appears it may be a bit more of a grey area.

Well, I'm not an investment expert, not even an economist, but I've picked up one or two things in the past decade or so. The problem is indeed the 'grey area', which often revolves around the Big Question what new, promising product/technology might realize which market share, resulting in how much returns, which may or may not cover the development investments which are usually difficult to trace. On all of those aspects, a company has a huge amount of room to portray things to their advantage, while analysts will have their own opinions based on their view on the market, technologies and the company in question. Effectively, it boils down to the phenomenon that a company's market capitalization fluctuates between the minimum level, which is essentially the value of the assets as you would get them from their books, and a hugely optimistic scenario in which everything goes as well as it possibly could. So in essence, the market moves within the grey area, while the things you learn in college about asset valuation usually only setting the lower limits of the market capitalization. Never forget that in the end, investment revolves around risk, and estimating risk revolves around...well, estimation, and not firm knowledge. So investment valuation moves per definition in a grey area.
