- 1944: Jean Bassett Johnson dies
Quote:
Jean Bassett Johnson (September 7, 1915 – April 4, 1944) was an American anthropologist and linguist who conducted field studies in Mexico during the 1930s and early 1940s. A doctoral candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, he was a student of Alfred Kroeber and Robert Lowie.
Johnson carried out field research among the Chinantec and Mazatec in Oaxaca, the Nahuatl in Jalisco and Colima, and the Yaqui, Varohio, Pima and Opata in Sonora. In July 1938, in Huautla de Jimenez, he and his wife, anthropologist Irmgard Weitlaner-Johnson, along with Bernard Bevan and Louise Lacaud, were some of the first outsiders, in addition to Robert J. Weitlaner (1936), to witness and record a Mazatec healing ceremony where hallucinogenic psilocybin mushrooms (teonanacatl) were consumed. During the course of his research on Mazatec healing practices, Johnson also recorded the use of another hallucinogen, “hierba Maria” now known to be Salvia divinorum. In 1939-1940, under the direction of Morris Swadesh, Johnson conducted a study of the Yaqui language, published posthumously.
Johnson's studies were interrupted by the Second World War. He joined the United States Naval Reserve in 1942 and died in Tunisia in 1944.

- 1967: Owsley Stanley, Melissa Cargill, Michael Steven Jackson and Rhoney Gissen are arrested for possession of LSD, marijuana, hashish and other drugs
Quote:
Dismissal of charges anticipated in_drug case due to illegal search
CARMEL — The case against two men and two women charged with possession of thousands of dollars worth of drugs and drug implements in a car stopped by State Police on the Taconic State Parkway in 1967 is expected to be dropped on the grounds that the evidence was not seized legally.. The question of whether or lot a crime was committed, was not discussed in a hearing before County Judge Fred A. Dickinson Monday afternoon. The only question under discussion was whether the evidence was seized legally.
JUDGE DICKINSON reserved decision on the case but at the same time told Henry Rothblatt of the Bronx, attorney for the defense and cohort of the famous criminal lawyer F. Lee Bailey, that his clients were free to return to California. Judge Dickinson also told the court that he believes the evidence was not seized legally. Arrested on a charge of felonious possession of marijuana, opium and LSD April 4, 1967 was Augustus Owsley Stanley, 34 of San Francisco. His companions, Michael Steven Jackson, 31, of Hollywood; Rhona Helen Gissen, 27 of Mt Vernon„ and Melissa Dianne Cargill, 26, of Berkeley, Caif ; were all charged with possession of marijuana. The four were aided in their defense in 1967 by Dr. Timothy Leary who became nationally known as an exponent of the use of LSD. Stanley. who is known as "the LSD king of California" was arrested in that state last year and charged with manufacturing large quantities of the drug at his home. He is said to have made several million dollars through the manufacture and sale of LSD before the drug was declared illegal in California. The arresting trooper, James William Dudley, currently stationed at Plattsburg State Police Barracks, was the only person to testify during the hearing to evidence also known as a "Huntley Hearing". At the time of the arrest Trooper Dudley was stationed at Putnam Valley barracks, which is only a few feet from the location on the Taconic Parkway where the couples were arrested. According to testimony they were driving a yellow rented car. They had previously asked Trooper Dudley who was parked on Mill Street near the Taconic parkway how to reach the Putnam Valley Town Hall. THE TROOPER, then asked to .see their driver's license and questioned them on their names, occupations, ages, date and place of birth. The trooper gave them directions to the town hall, followed them in his car and later checked with state police files in headquarters. None of the persons in the car were wanted for any crime, he learned. Defense counsel's cross examination of the trooper revealed that the trooper asked to search the trunk of the car and was allowed to do so by the occupants and was denied permission to search the luggage in the trunk. The attorney accused the trooper of judging the occupants on their appearance. The four were dressed in strange clothes and the men had shoulder length hair. One man, at the time of his arrest was described as "looking like Jesus Christ." To many of the questions placed by the defense to the trooper he answered "I don't recall." As Mr. Stanley emerged from the vehicle during the second check a packet of hashish fell to the ground and was picked up by the trooper.

- 1979: Peter Wylie, Sheldon Perluss and David Bachrach are found guilty of manufacturing and distribution of LSD
Quote:
625 F. 2d 1371 - United States v. Wylie Home625 f2d 1371 united states v. wylie
625 F.2d 1371
UNITED STATES of America, Plaintiff-Appellee, v. Peter WYLIE, Defendant-Appellant. UNITED STATES of America, Plaintiff-Appellee, v. Sheldon PERLUSS, Defendant-Appellant. UNITED STATES of America, Plaintiff-Appellee, v. David BACHRACH, Defendant-Appellant.
Nos. 79-1362, 79-1363 and 79-1431.
United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit.
Submitted Feb. 14, 1980. Decided July 16, 1980. Rehearing Denied in No. 79-1363 Sept. 8, 1980.
1
The defendants (Wylie, Perluss, and Bachrach) bring this appeal from their convictions on a seven-count indictment charging a large scale LSD manufacturing and distribution operation. They raise several arguments on appeal which fall into three general categories: (1) the adequacy of the government's denial of electronic surveillance; (2) the outrageousness of the government's involvement in the criminal enterprise; and (3) various challenges to the length of sentences which were imposed. We find no reversible error and affirm their convictions. For the reasons stated hereinafter, the sentences are vacated and we remand for resentencing.
All of the defendants were charged with conspiracy to manufacture and distribute LSD in violation of 21 U.S.C. § 846 (Count 1). Wylie and Bachrach were charged with four counts for the actual distribution of LSD in violation of 21 U.S.C. § 841(a)(1) (2d/13Counts 2 through 5). These substantive counts were based on the four different exchanges which occurred on November 27, December 1, December 7, and January 3. The sixth count charged Wylie, Bachrach, and Perluss with distribution (21 U.S.C. § 841(a)(1)) based on the exchange of the 226,400 units of LSD on January 18. And finally, the seventh count, charged Wylie and Bachrach with the use of a telephone to facilitate distribution of LSD in violation of 21 U.S.C. § 843(b). After a six-day trial, on April 4, 1979, a jury found the defendants guilty on all counts.

- 1979: Andrew Welch and Barry Michael are indicted for manufacturing MDA under Operation Yellow Jacket
Quote:
A DEA chemist in Miami was flown to Atlanta and took scrapings of residue from equipment found in the bin. The residue was analyzed as 97 percent, 98 percent and 99 percent pure MDA. Boxes in the warehouse bin carried the names of Welch and Michael. The two were indicted by a federal grand jury April 4, 1979, on charges of conspiring to manufacture and distribute MDA. The case against Michael was lost when a judge granted a defense motion to suppress crucial evidence. The judge's ruling is under appeal by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Atlanta. Information on Welch's case was unavailable Tuesday.

- 2003: AMT and 5-MeO-DIPT become illegal
Quote:
AMT
Timeline
by Erowid
Mar 1968 U.S.: The Bureau of Drug Abuse Control mentions in Microgram that AMT (IT-290) is available on the street as a "new" hallucinogen. 1 1997 AMT is briefly available for purchase on the internet through CRSB.
Autumn 1998 AMT becomes more widely available for purchase through research chemical websites.
Jan 28, 2003 The DEA announces its intent to emergency schedule both AMT and 5-MeO-DIPT.
Apr 4, 2003 Both AMT and 5-MeO-DIPT are placed into Schedule I through the emergency scheduling procedure. This makes both chemicals illegal to buy, sell, or possess without a DEA license.
Sep 29, 2004 AMT is placed 'permanently' into Schedule I in the U.S.

10 years since these drugs became illegal. I remember when they were both for sale on the research chemical market. For some reason I chose 5-MeO-DIPT and not AMT, even though AMT aka IT-290, was referred to by Ken Kesey as "the Rolls Royce of Psychedelics". Oh well.

Thanks for the heads up. I re-uploaded it. I didn't think anyone actually listened to those. But by research chemical market, I just mean that you could buy both of those drugs as "research chemicals" on the internet back in the day. For some stupid reason, I chose 5-MeO-DIPT and not AMT.

Here's the wikipedia page for AMT. Looks like it was legal in the UK until three months ago. I guess because a teen died from it two years ago. It's always one asshole who ruins it for everyone.
Quote:
α-Methyltryptamine (abbreviated as αMT, AMT; former brand Indopan) is a psychedelic, stimulant, and entactogen drug of the tryptamine class. It was originally developed as an antidepressant by workers at Upjohn in the 1960s.''
Chemistry
αMT is tryptamine with a methyl substituent at the alpha carbon. Its chemical relation to tryptamine is analogous to that of amphetamine to phenethylamine, amphetamine being α-methylphenethylamine. αMT is closely related to the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) which partially explains its mechanism of action.
Pharmacology
αMT acts as a relatively balanced reuptake inhibitor and releasing agent of the main three monoamines; serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine,[5] and as a non-selective serotonin receptor agonist.
MAOI activity
αMT has been shown as a reversible inhibitor of the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO) in-vitro[7] and in-vivo.[8]
In rats the potency of αMT as an MAO-A inhibitor in the brain was approximately equal to that of harmaline at equimolar doses.[note 1] Dexamphetamine did not enhance the 5-hydroxytryptophan-induced rise of serotonin at any level.
A typical dose of harmaline for MAO inhibition is 150 mg, higher than any typical αMT dose so αMT's MAOI activity at typical doses will be significant but not total. The danger rises exponentially as αMT doses approach 150 mg due to increased monoamine release and increased MAO inhibition.
Metabolism
2-Oxo-αMT, 6-hydroxy-αMT,[12] 7-hydroxy-αMT and 1′-hydroxy-αMT were detected as metabolites of αMT in male Wistar rats.
Dosage and effects
With 20–30 milligrams, euphoria, empathy, and psychedelic effects become apparent and can last as long as 12 hours. A dose exceeding 40 mg is generally considered as strong. In rare cases or extreme doses the duration of effects might exceed 24 hours. αMT in freebase form is reported by users to have been smoked, with doses of between and 2–5 milligrams being cited.
Reported side effects include anxiety, restlessness, muscle tension, jaw tightness, pupil dilation, tachycardia, headaches, nausea, and vomiting, among other effects that might commonly be attributed to LSD, psilocybin, DMT and MDMA, such as open-eye visuals, closed eye visuals and an altered state of mind.
In spite of some reported experiential similarities to MDMA, the chemicals are structurally unrelated; αMT is a tryptamine while MDMA is a phenethylamine.
Like many other serotonin releasing agents, αMT's analogue αET has been shown to produce long-lasting serotonergic neurotoxicity at very high doses. It is possible that αMT could cause the same neurotoxicity.
Legality
Australia
The 5-Methoxy analogue, 5-MeO-αMT is schedule 9 in Australia and αMT would be controlled as an analogue of this.
Denmark
In Denmark (2010), the Danish Minister for the Interior and Health placed αMT to their lists of controlled substances(List B).
Canada
Canada has no mention of αMT in the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. However, αMT is on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals(REACH) list of pre-registered substances as of March 2009.
Germany
αMT is listed under the Narcotics Act in schedule 1 (narcotics not eligible for trade and medical prescriptions) in Germany.
Austria
αMT is placed under Austrian law (NPSG) Group 6.
Hungary
αMT was controlled on the Schedule C list in Hungary in 2013.
Slovakia
αMT was placed in 2013 on the List of Hazardous Substances in Annex, § 2 in Slovakia.
αMT appeared on the Decree on Classification of Illicit Drugs in Slovenia (2013).
Lithuania
In Lithuania (2012), αMT is controlled as a tryptamine derivative put under control in the 1st list of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances which use is prohibited for medical purposes.
Spain
αMT is legal in Spain.
Sweden
Sveriges riksdags health ministry Statens folkhälsoinstitut classified αMT as "health hazard" under the act Lagen om förbud mot vissa hälsofarliga varor (translated Act on the Prohibition of Certain Goods Dangerous to Health) as of Mar 1, 2005, in their regulation SFS 2005:26 listed as alfa-metyltryptamin (AMT), making it illegal to sell or possess.
UK
αMT was made illegal in the United Kingdom as of 7 January 2015, along with 5-MeO-DALT.[22] This was following the events of 10 June 2014 when the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs recommended that αMT be scheduled as a class A drug by updating the blanket ban clause on tryptamines.
USA
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) placed αMT temporarily in schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) on April 4, 2003, pursuant to the temporary scheduling provisions of the CSA (68 FR16427). On September 29, 2004, αMT was permanently controlled as a schedule I substance under the CSA (69FR 58050).
Reported Deaths
Deaths from αMT are rare but as a powerful monoamine releaser injury can occur when excessive doses are taken or when taken with drugs such as MAOIs. Most fatalities are not verified but those which are involve excessive doses or coingestion with other drugs. A British teenager died after consuming 1 g of αMT in August 2013.

50th anniversary of Owsley and company being arrested in Putnam County for possession of LSD, marijuana, etc. Let's all take a lesson from that incident. The cop asked for permission to search his car and he gave it to him! Don't ever do that.
