I need help with sterilization. Will this work??

I've got everything ready and I only have one window to do this then I have a busy busy few weeks ahead of me, can't even stay near a stove for 90 mins. I read that people say use a pot. Can I use a stock pot? This is different from a crock pot which is electrical and makes veggies and chicken, a stock pot is a tall pot.

Will this work? I have another pot but it has a hole in the lid for steam escape, seems like that would defeat the purpose?
And I used search button, people keep referring to a stock pot as a crock pot which is very much different. I need a definitive answer please.
Thanks so much in advance!

For PF Tek? Yes, it should work, although actual sterilization with a PC (that can reach sterile temps) is undeniably superior. You'll probably see steam escaping from the device pictured as well.

it's all i got really. i have the other pot but it seems to be less air tight.
also why does rogerrabbit say don't put jars in water (even though he tapes and wraps in aluminum foil) and everyone else says put it 1/3-1/2 in the water??? i have stacked the lids and foil (2 layers) like the vid but i am so confused here and very tired i need to do this asap

Stack em on top of a few jar lids, and then add just enough water such that the water level is just touching the bottom of the jars. It is the steam that does the sterilizing, not the water. Just make sure steam is being produced the entire time, and go for 90 minutes after you're up to temp.
Also, if I recall correctly, RogerRabbit's tek doesn't call for any tape. That's what the dry verm layer is for. The foil is just there so that water condensation doesn't make its way into the verm layer.

No, you are wrong. Micropore tape is useful during the inoculation process, then you can take it off.

Don't use this steam method for anything BUT pf tek.. It will not be relatively sucessful for grains and other spawn substrates.

No, you are wrong. Micropore tape is useful during the inoculation process, then you can take it off.
Actually I think you both are incorrect. In RR's videos, micropore tape is clearly called for as Jim puts it on pre sterilization. The micropore tape's purpose for use with BRF cakes constructed per the tek are not an aid in the inoculation process. Moreover, micropore tape's purpose for properly constructed BRF cakes are a means of filtered ventilation for whenever you steam sterilize or PC your cakes and they are cooling down, de-pressurizing because BRF cakes designed per the tek's lids are rubber side down.
Quote:

This is partially correct. The foil is used to protect the dripping condensation that forms on the bottom of the sterilizer's lid during the sterilization cycle that rains down onto the jars from moistening the micropore tape and possible moisture introduction to the dry vermiculite barrier from that, yes. The foil is also used to keep the boiling water from the bottom of the sterilizer from being thrusted between the lids and threads of jar during sterilization, also causing your dry vermiculite barrier to become moistened. I'm always sure to keep the foil removed during colonization nor do I replace the micropore tape for colonization.

Is the tape considered optional, or mandatory?
That's what I get for watching abbreviated material on youtube rather than forking out the money for the full DVD. totally missed that part, but now I can see clearly that there is tape over the lid. Thanks for clarifying.

"The purpose of the micropore tape is to protect the top of the verm layer until you inoculate. If you don't use it, there's the possibility that mold spores will slip through the holes in the lid and land on the verm, and then your syringe will push it through to the rice flour below."(RR).
That's why micropore tape is useful for the inoculation process.

Depends on whether or not you design the cakes per the tek or not. If you do then yes, the tape's mandatory. If you fit BRF cakes with properly constructed grain jar lids for colonization then no, the tape has no place.

Gotcha. Its funny how subtle that detail is in the quickie youtube vids. Now I know I need the DVD.

At which point during the process is this most likely to happen? When removing the foil inside the still-air box?
Any decent MP tape alternatives you'd suggest? Like the tape I use to wrap the balls of my feet for cross country running?

This makes sense to me. You swear you'r RR when you use the though. However, I stand by my position that another purpose for the micropore tape in BRF cakes constructed per the tek is to keep the air being sucked into the jars clean while they are cooling due to the lids being rubber side down. Good day to you and Happy Shrooming.

so they've been cooling down. is it ok to leave them in the water in the pot?? also it's not an air lock lid so is it ok to be stored on a shelf that has been wiped down with iso + lysol wipes?
and can i move them into the GB with the foil on, remove it in there and noc them up? would i need to spray the room with disinfectant? (i have lysol spray idk why oust is more recommended)
my syringe is already 2 days late from VERY RELIABLE vendor from here

what do you consider late ? was there a tracking number or are you guesstimating ?
you can leave them for a pretty good amount of time with the foil on ... and yes i always leave them on till already in the GB ... just makes sense to keep the lid contaminate free ...
as for sterilizing work areas and storage ... knock yourself out ... what you plan is more than enough safety measure ...

and that line is an estimate of where the water rose during boil. it started to boil then i turned it down to medium. i did the 2-1-1 verm/brf/water followed pf tek exactly, did the wipe down of moisture, stacked lids, but somehow the water wasn't measured completely off of the jars (i think it was 1/3 submerged or even 1/2...). i read on some threads that this is ok but others that it's not.
any and all help is deeply appreciated. thank you again. <33

Boiling water can come up from the bottom of the sterilizer during the sterilization run and get into the jars between the threads and lids ruining the hard worked for moisture content of the substrate during the sterilization cylcle which is why it's prescribed to not submerge, at all, those little half-pint jars during sterilization. The fact that they were is ok so long as water didn't find it's way into your jars. Also, steam is the best at transferring heat into items that are desired to be sterilized.

They look ok to me too. Just be sure you inspect each of your jars to see if any heavy moisture pooling is present at the bottom of the jars before considering inoculating or starting over.
