How long should horse shit be left to colonize?
    #1421728 - 04/01/03 04:23 PM (21 years, 1 day ago)

AFOAF spawned a fair size amount of dung. Its been colonizing for over 2 weeks now, the surface and half way to the bottom are rich with overpowering white mycelium, however on the bottom of the batch there is rhizo all over but its not thick white mycelia, the dung is about 2 inches deep or so, can my friends friend case it now with as good of results or should she let it go for another week or two to make sure the bottom becomes mycelia rich.

My friend says to case it after 100% colonization is achieved.

You'll have better results with a deeper substrate; two inches is not very much.

so, I'm a bit curious as to how you can tell how thoroughly substrate is colonized below the surface. seems that an opaque bin is necessary for a substrate like cased dung. I have tossed contaminated casings which had very much appeared 100% colonized on the surface but revealed themselves to have uncolonized portions at the bottom.

also, I am curious about the substrate depth that Dog mentioned. how compressed (dense) was the substrate that is >2 inches?

kramer some times uses the "flip"tek when he is in your shoes
he flips the mostly colonize mass over and puts a nice casing layer on the bottom and one on top about 3/4 to 1 inch thick
this also helps get your substrate even for a perfect pinset

You did something wrong if your poo is taking that long to colonize.

I never have to wait more than 5 to 9 days at the most for 100% colonization...and thats with 4" to 6" of poo.

Either you didn't use enough substrate to spawn the poo.
..or you didn't make your poo with the right moisture content.
You make the poo too wet...you get hardly any growth and get contams.
You make it too dry and it takes forever to colonize and you might get contams.

How much substrate did you use?
What was the moisture content of your poo?

Interesting idea. My friend will file this under "future experiments".

Ok first things first, my friend knows the bottom is not 100% colonized because she used a transparent rubbermaid container to spawn in. she knows it needs darkness so there is actually left over black&white poly plastic surrounding her collection of colonizing goodies. So why does the container have to be opaque if its in a 100% dark environment anyways.

The 2 inches of shit is packed and pressed down quick thickly. Which also might be a reason for delaying colo.

Now she knows she did something wrong, because she was unable to pasteurize it because her roommates were ready to kill her after she proposed that she was going to put horse shit in the microwave or on the stove, so she unwillingly resigned to their will as she always does, and decided to just give it a try unpasteurized, it seems to be going quite well with no contams visible as of yet.
She has decided to give it a couple more days until casing.

She is very grateful for the advice.

LOL .......... you will find out when you expose it to light, to initiate pins.

OKAY.... without the wait..........

Because under the right conditions, wherever the myc is exposed to light, it will pin & fruit.

That is why you want any container to be dark & thick enough... it will not allow light to shine through the bottom or sides.

6T

Not fun having shrooms growing on the sides & bottom of a tub.

practice is good. it's crucial and inevitable. however, a more informative response seems in order here... When you squeeze and the moisture wells out but doesn't form a full drip then it is right about perfect.
