Problem with rust
    #14230960 - 04/03/11 12:21 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

SWIM has been having problem with their lids getting rust on them where they punch the holes for inoculation.

SWIM was wondering if that is normal or if it would mess anything up.. SWIM said it has been going on for some time now and has had no adverse effects, so SWIM is thinking its not going to hurt anything.
Is SWIM right?

Carl: Yeah.
Master Shake: You dropped something.
Carl: Eh, that's okay. I don't need it anymore.
Master Shake: What if it's a golden egg?
Carl: Heh, how about you crack it open with your teeth, and see if it is?
Master Shake: (chomps) Ugh, it's not!
Carl: (laughs) Sucker.

I doubt ingesting a bit of iron oxide is going to hurt you. Sure it would just pass through your body.

Rust is oxidized steel/iron, which is a mineral, so it won't hurt anything. Everyone has rusty lids.

Could you seal the lids with something after you drill them?  Perhaps High Temp Polyurethane?  Also a little RTV to cover the exposed raw metal would help.

Warning Geek stuff ( possibly all crap)

Rust is oxidised metal.  Could the metal as it is being oxidised by oxygen create any sort of ionic field which could attract contams by pulling any small particles towards the rust?

no.. dont worry about it.. everyone get it, and its not an issue.. it wouldnt matter if it did create any sort of ionic field, because you should have the holes filtered anyway

It's not a prob. with the mushrooms. If you are doing anything other than pf tek, you should replace them when the seals fuck up or have a serious wound or when they crack up.

Eventually, the lids get so rusty the seal between the glass and lid will begin to leak.  At that point, either replace the lid or polish it with a green scouring pad to remove the rust.  Other than that, the rust is harmless.  Obviously, you want to avoid cutting yourself on the sharp, rusty burrs.
