I start my most interesting "physical" adventure on Tuesday.

I leave Pittsburgh International Airport Tuesday afternoon, and after a connection in Dallas, will end up in Seattle early Wednesday morning. This will be the first time I've been on a plane, aside from once when I was an infant. This will also mark the first time I've been to the Pacific side of the country. I've been all over the South and Northeast during my year so far, but have never been further west than Illinois or Louisiana.
I get to see a friend of mine that I graduated school with. He's been able to come out here a couple of times, but I can see that "same old song and dance" type feeling when he is here. This place is boring. All the same people; all the same stories; all the same diseases. A lot of us are Eskimo brothers 2 or 3 times over by now.
My buddy was lucky enough to just receive a a promotion with his job with Honda, and is getting a little vacation in between his transition. Which is part of the reason I am going to hippie/emo-land. I've been looking for a car, and want a Jetta TDI, and he told me they are everywhere out there because people love he Bio-diesel conversions. You can also adjust the injection quantity to tune the car specifically for efficiency, and reportedly run it for 60 - 65 mpg of diesel fuel. My friend is going to try to help me find a well maintained car, just not one tha was spruced up for sale.
(Here's the wagon I so badly want, but its not about the style; its about the MPGs)

My flight is one way. I am driving from Seattle back to the Ohio Valley after a 5-7 day visit. It's roughly 2500 miles and will take me 3-5 days and probably through a couple rent-a-shower truck stops. I've been thinking about meandering back through the states, however. I'm just gonna let go, though, and follow my heart.
I'll post some pictures in this thread as I am around. over the next few weeks.

Sweet, sounds like fun. I have an old VW Golf that's a diesel, and gets 40-45mpg. Fucker's got about 260K on it, and it's still going strong.
Diesel FTW.

Isn't it just funny how focused on gasoline, electric, and hybrid the US market is, when Diesel has ALWAYS BEEN THERE.
Let me ask you; when you're driving your Golf, does it smell like you're driving a Kerosene heater?

Nope. It's old, and they didn't insulate much for engine noise, so it kinda sounds like a big rig, but I think that's pretty awesome. As far as the smell though, it's no different than any diesel truck, but since it's only a 1.6L engine, there's not a shitload of smoke belching out of the exhaust pipe. It's a clean car for sure, and just passed emissions with flying colors.
What's even more ridiculous about diesel is the insane restrictions that the goddamn US puts on the importation of diesel vehicles. It's almost as if the oil companies and the government are working together to keep us from being sensible... oh wait.
