A glass canning jar is a good idea, but several layers of plastic bags and tupperware also works.
I'd put it at least a foot down and use gps to make sure you don't forget where it is.
Animals often dig for food where there has been recent digging activity, so a glass jar is a real good idea for that reason and also to prevent condensation. Desiccant is also very helpful.
Make sure you look like a regular nature enthusiast out for a day hike as you are putting it there and retrieving it.
I would suggest NOT using glass as the earth is constantly moving and the likelyhood the glass will break is probable.

The earth does not constantly move and break buried glass containers, unless you bury it in a landslide zone.
I would be more worried about animals chewing through plastic containers.

I did this exact same thing. I grew weed two summers ago and came up with a much bigger-than-expected surplus. Over 1 pound and I wasn't selling it, so I felt very anxious keeping it in my house. At the same time, I also had over 8 or 9 ounces of mushrooms. So I bought myself a vacuum sealer and sealed them all airtight and then put those into a large rubbermaid container and duct-taped it up. Then I put that into a garbage bag. I went to a remote location in the woods and dug a slightly-less-than 3 foot deep hole, covered it in some heavy rocks and then covered it up with dirt.
Remember to cover it with the rocks because heavy rains can make the air-filled container buoyant and pop it out of the ground. Also, I put small quantities in many bags instead of all in one big bag. That way, the failure of one or two bags won't be catastrophic. I only went up to make a withdrawal once in over a year. I haven't been there since before the winter, so I wonder how the goods held up.
