* Tasmania season 2011 *

Hi All,
It's well and truly happening here in Tas.
went for a walk today and found these.
First Psilocybe semilanceata:
Found at the same spot as last year. Its been quite dry and warm the last couple of days where i am in Tas, so they are a little dried out, and im a little disappointed that they are not more representative.
as they are hygrophanous the viscid layer has dried out completely and they have dried to a yellowish colour.

This one is getting on, as the base has started decomposing, but you can see the dried out nipple at the top.

Hopefully over the next few weeks as it gets colder and wetter, i'll be able to photograph some better samples.
Here is the thread i started last year: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12569847#12569847 These semilanceata were from the same location.
Also found some Psilocybe subaeruginosa:
Found these lovely little babies. looks like the season has been happening for a couple of weeks now as i saw heaps of rotting ones.
still quite dry in places so looking like its not going to be as early as i had expected.
ah well. here's the pics:

Cheers, Obtuse.

Na not out in the open yet.
still too dry where i am.
all the ones i saw were in amongst small shrubs, and in amongst the leaf litter of small gum trees.
Hoping for some good rain, and a drop in temp so i can get a few pics of them growing out in the open.
Cheers, Obtuse.

Me and a mate went for a hunt yesterday. Found 40 subs and a possible liberty cap. Just when we thought the hunt was over and we were waiting for the bus, we found a massive patch of amanitas on someones front lawn. There were literally about 50 there of all sizes. We grabbed 3 little ones and a big one.

After looking at it more closely I think it might just be a sub with a very long stem and a small conical cap. Also, just found a nice sub in my backyard.

Found 120 today after a quick hunt before work. Only had time to scour close to Hobart itself before I had to do things. Going with a mate to some further out spots for big game hunting. Will hopefully have a camera by then and can post pics.
So happy the season is here in force so soon

Went for a quick hunt on the eastern shore, not really expecting to find much, but luckily I found 26 subs! About 15 weren't fully matured, but I decided to pick them anyway due to the fact that they were growing in a school playground and I didn't think they would last too long.

Try and keep the patch going. That is if you can access it without any issues E.G close to home or being seen in the school grounds during out of school hrs. If you can access quite easy throw a few pine wood chips around the habitat. They look nice healthy shrooms

Been having very good luck lately.
Found 44 very nice sized subs on Wednesday and split them between 5 people, as well as 11 dried subs from a previous hunt.
Then today, found these nice subs.

The ones in the top right corner are dried subs from a previous hunt last week.

Been having pretty good luck with subs in the last week or so. I currently have about 100 dried and another 300+ drying.
Last 3 pics were found today at a school, growing on an oval. I have no idea how they've lasted this long without getting trampled.

I found a great spot, and i'm suprised that it hasn't been raided as its about 20meters from a road. There are alot pins and another heap teenagers. I've taken the matured ones.
I'm wondering if anyone knows how long it takes for a pin to get to its optimum picking stage?
Oh and the 'working water' is trashed.... I hear good things about the 'Field of Mountain.
I'm not following.. what is the "stand by me" bit you guys are talking about?

Hey guys,
At last, I found some subs!!! I found a couple at this one place, then searched at another place that is more well-known and got 3 more. I was discouraged, until I stumbled upon the most glorious patch I could imagine, in a spot I would have assumed would be completely picked over. Basically, it was a large mulched area located close to a well-trafficked spot.
My friend and I picked only what we/a few friends would need until we fly home at the end of June and about 75% of the patch was left intact.
There must have been 150+ subs left intact.
We have tested them a couple times since and they were amazing.
I'll be posting pics soon!
Happy hunting!

Hey guys. I was wondering if any of the 'trusted identifiers' can give some opinions on these guys.
Am I right in thinking they are P.subaeruginosa? They look a bit different to the P.subs I find in Melbourne. I know there's meant to be a P.tasmaniana but I dont think this is it... at least it doesnt meet the descriptions I have read of P.tasmaniana.

They all look good to me. i know im not a trusted identifier yet but i think their all ok. i could only give a definite if i saw them directly, but they all seem to have the characteristics, them being old makes it it a little harder to id for sure.
but a good representation of the variability we get in tasmania.
what general area did you find these if you dont mind my asking.
Cheers, Obtuse.

but a good representation of the variability we get in tasmania.
what general area did you find these if you dont mind my asking.
Cheers, Obtuse.
They were collected in the north of the state. They are definitely actives, I just wanna get an i.d on them. Im 90% sure they are P.sub...

I'm not sure about the mushroom in pics 3&4 but I'd call the rest P. subaeruginosa

Compare the prints.
The purplish ones were left by subs, while the black one was left by the other mushroom.

I admit that it does look a bit like a sub, but it has none of the same characteristics of the other subs from the same patch, the spore print was jet black and blue bruising was not apparent.

Yeah all good. I thought it was a sub at first glance too.
That glass box sounds good, make sure you get some pictures up once it's completed. Are you just using sub spores or experimenting with different species also?
I have some sub mycelium growing outside in an icecream container which I am going to transplant into some woodchips in a few more months. Hopefully by this time next year it will be fruiting.

Cheeers dude.
Hopefully there's still a few more weeks left in the season. I wish I took my camera with me on some of my earlier hunts, the patches and amounts of mushrooms to be found were a lot greater back then.

Seasons winding up down S.A way, people are still finding some, mostly quite dry though I'm probably going to go out once or twice but that'll most likely be it for me this year.

Good luck then, hope you can find a few more before the end of the season.
We have had a very strange winter down in Tassie this year, but it seems like it's perfect for the mushrooms. I'm expecting things to have pretty much stopped by the beginning of September though, but there's still at least another good week of hunting.

That was all that's left at my patch. Few pins were still popping up, but with this nice weather we are having I doubt they'll make.

Yeah the weather has really changed in the last week, so those places lucky enough to be still flushing would be over and done with now i reckon.
The areas near me finished early this year. and from what i hear so did many other spots.
did well ben.
Prolly catch youse all next year, unless i find some georgeous summer fungi worth posting about.

Not in Tassie. You'll have to wait until next winter. Towards then end of April is a good time to start looking, but don't expect to find much until Winter really starts kicking in.
