I stuck this cutting in the soil about two months ago and the top is not looking so good. What do you guys think is wrong with it?

overstand it is too difficult to see exactly what is going on. maybe shine a bright lamp on it so your camera can focus better. From what I can see it looks like the top is drying/callousing.

Sorry for the bad pictures. All I have is a crappy 2 megapixel cellphone camera. There are dark spots on the top. Here are some pictures from about 2 weeks ago. There was a dark brownish – blackish discoloration on the top. It has now turned to light beige. Is this normal? Do you guys think it will still put out some pups?

So long as everything is hard to the touch and not soft and squishy, it should be fine.
From what you describe it's just callusing and it should pup once favourable conditions return. Ie: Spring.

Up side down???????????????
I do see that the thicker end is in the soil. I thought that it would root better that way. Am I mistaken?
Do you guys think I would get more growth from this if I cut it into two 6 inch segments?

Good call!! I didn't even check to see the orientation and it's something I usually do.
Also LOL!
@OP: Get that thing planted the right way up and I wouldn't cut it into smaller pieces. It'll probably put out more than one pup once it gets growing.

This is my first time rooting a cactus. What makes you guys say that it is upside down?

your spines are pointing down. The bulge and indent of the areole gives it away.

Don;t sweat about it being upside down though, the new growth will still form.. But regarding the tip, it's hard to tell from the pic, but it could be rotting. The second set of pics look more so like rot given the dark color. Feel to see if it is mushy in any way. If so, you'll want to cut and recallous. Ideally, you do not want to make cuts now, assuming the cactus is in dormancy or is just coming out of it. But if you are getting mush, there' no other option. If it's not soft, try to hold out.

Oh wow, I had no idea about it being upside down. waixingren thank you for explaining that.
I pulled this guy out of the soil and I did not see a single damn root. I did see some mush. There was some gooey liquid in the core and the entire bottom was soft and mushy. So I am guessing it is rot.
Thanks for the advice Worldseedsupply dude. I am a fan of your store. I got some bridgesii seeds from you recently. I sowed them about a week agao and I already see a few sprouts. I got some seeds from another vender that have been in the ground for over three weeks and not a single sprout.
Anyway though, I will cut this rot off and hope for the best. Do you guys think I could just go ahead and put this dry end in the soil? I think it is callused. It is not soft at all.

I cant believe so many of us missed that it was upside down. If the other end is not rotting and nicely callused then stick it back in the pot the right way up. The end that was in the soil I would chop a slice off below the soft part and if it looks good leave it at that if not take another slice until you get below the soft part. If you are going to put it out side I would make the cut at a slight angle so water cant pool on the end. Your confused little cacti should start throwing out roots and pupping if the weather is warm enough. Dont water until you have warm weather or for at least a couple of weeks and then only a small amount until you get some growth.
Cheers Got

I'm glad you are having good results with the bridgesii. These are definitely a good batch.
As for the cutting, you can plant the end that is not rotting. I must warn though that I've had a lot of cacti that were in dormancy die from a small bit of rot on one end. They just dont bounce back the same as whent hey are in active growth. Instead of callousing at the point of the new cut, they would shrivel up at that end and eventually rot altogether. If the cutting is in active growth, it's a lot easier to bounce back because the immune system is active. Sometimes you'll notice a tiny bit of brown that has already spread further up inside the cutting. I would make sure to cut any brown at all away and then put the cutting in an environment that will facilitate the drying process. If it's going to be dry and it's not too cold, I might get the plant outside. The fresh air might be good for it, and depending on the weather it might start to break dormancy a bit. But you have to be very careful of any rain that might come and possible nighttime temp drops.
