Nice pictures! I went backpacking in the mountains on Friday / Today and had a real nice trip. Snow is finally starting to melt and the new season is upon us. Really looking forward to the aspens getting some green back on them.

nice. you must live out West. i lived in Colorado as a kid. fuckin' loved it. epic nature not but an hours drive away
i wish we had stuck around the Rockies.
i take most of my hikes around the Appalachian foothills now. really gorgeous this time of the year.

Yeah in Colorado. It's nice being close to nature, 30 minute drive and I can hit the trails to solitude in the mountains. All most hiking / backpacking experience has been in the west, really looking forward to exploring the east coast. Going to though hike the Colorado Trail this summer (483 miles) and hopefully try my hand at the AT sometime in the future.

Crappy cell phone shot of my camp site, last two cameras got stolen so I am saving up for a nice one.

wow, this looks like a seriously legit endeavor. i'm impressed. i need to get a tent and get over my irrational fear of sleeping alone in the woods and on the trail.
i'm gonna go read about the Colorado Trail, never heard of it.
what have you been doing to prepare for the hike? how long do you plan to be out for?

That is awesome. Will you start in Denver or Durango. I've hiked it near Durango and it is awesome.

Nothing to prepare yet, been sitting on my ass all winter so need to get things in gear. I'm going to have 3 - 4 days a week off starting in May so I plan to just start backpacking and getting used to being on the trail and putting in some serious miles for a few days at a time. "The only way to train yourself to climb mountains is to climb mountains" - pretty much going by that for training for the hike. Really need to get my gear weight down - don't want my pack over 30lbs with 3 - 4 days of food. So just getting out there and doing it I guess.
I attempted hiking the Oregon Coastal Trail a few years ago with little experience and no training and gave up after 75 miles because I didn't really plan camping spots and my feet were getting pretty blistered. So I just need to get my feet in shape and get a better plan in action.
I would like to complete it in a month, which is about 16 miles a day. There is quite a bit of elevation gain and loss so with a heavyish pack 16 miles a day for 30 days is going to kick my ass. But I love big challenges, they have the biggest rewards, so looking forward to it.
I love camping in the woods alone, really enjoy the solitude and peace it brings. I still get a little creeped out at night when its really dark and I hear some sounds outside. But I have never had a problem, other then mice chewing though one tent I had and crawling on me looking for food - that really scared me

Thinking Denver to Durango, snow melts earlier and it starts with lower elevation gains to ease myself into it.

Cool pics! I found some onions growing wild the other day, yum!

Also saw some wild lettuce (lactuca) growing nearby, lots of dandelions, blackberry shoots, all kinds of stuff popping up, i love this time of year!

man, 16 miles a day is out of the question for me right now. i'd have to start seriously hiking on a regular basis to get up to that mark. most of my hikes are around 3-6 miles. nice leisurely pace so i can take in my surroundings.

I'm going to go hunt some ramps as well as morels in a couple weeks, now is the season! I have a camping trip planned and i'm going to forage like a wildman
Must remember camera/batteries
Those onions i found are some kind of "domestic" onion that managed to escape into the "wild" (ditch) by means of garden clutter.
Score for me!

i didn't even know what a fiddle head was until you mentioned it. never heard a young fern called that before. the old wiki says it's a good edible veggie.
now i'll have to head out and intentionally forage for this plant

Just do a little research on which ferns are edible before you go. Lady ferns are the preferred type around the NW. I understand that bracket ferns can cause stomach cancer.

Took another hike today. Twas beautiful but warmer. Everything is coming to life (including the wildlife. almost stepped on a copperhead snake).
Enjoy the photos

White Violets.

found these lovely blossoms (Purple Violets) sprouting from a hole in a live tree (a treewell).

Southern Nodding Trillium

Southern Nodding Trillium

Pink Trillium

Wild White Violet

Purple Orchid

was almost finished hiking, came around a bend in the trail and nearly stepped right in front of this copperhead. she was literally about half a foot off the trail, coiled and ready to strike. i moved her a little further off the trail.
hiking in the South can be great, but in the Spring and Summer it becomes a jungle.
