do you think if you are a highly motivated musician, through the means of craigslist and finding like minded bands you can get enough gigs to make a sustainable living off of?
simple question, but obviously it varies, but lets just say you're going all out looking for kick ass bands and such and to make a lot of money.

Nope. Youde have just as much luck throwing paint at a canvas and selling it as art. Its all about connections. Craigslist and random gigs wont cut it.

Craigslist bands don't make hardly any money, unless you're fine with making $30 bucks a gig. I was with a signed band, recorded an album, toured all over the country and was just barely able to make ends meet.

The day I gave up on music as a career: I was with my best friens in a band. We decided to go at it. We got connections in other states through establishing ourselves locally for years. We went down to southern california to stay with an aquaintance. He lined some gigs up for us. One night after a gig, he had a party at his house. Just friends and locals. It got to be about 5am, drinking and passing the acoustic around a few friends. This local girl picked it up, and sang the most intense, sincere, perfect most beautiful song that hypnotized the entire room. It almost brought me to tears. I will never forget it. Ive never been so amazed by a muscian.. It was then that I realized we were out numbered, and out powered by millions of people.

I might be a little jaded though. I live in a town where on any given night you can go out and hear the greatest drummer/bassist/guitarist/vocalist, and know that these gigs are just supplementing other means of income.
It takes all of the stars, planets, chakras, and whatever else to align for you to be in a position where you can support yourself by solely playing music.

with that lack of will, and self doubt towards yourself and those around you, is 99% of the reason why you could never amount to anything in the music industry. It all comes down to how bad you want it.
