Stones
    #14227871 - 04/02/11 07:26 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Anyone else into stones? I tend to pick up random rocks that I find when hiking. Found some beautiful stones over the years that hold a great amount of significance.

i've been thinking about looking into geology. because let's face it, rocks rock :fasted:

I can relate. I dont take every rock home, but it seems when in hiking Im always looking down, distracted by surrounding rocks. Ive taken home some really awesome ones, but not all of them. I used to have a totally great, crazy druggie hippie friend. He would often pay for rides and smokes with rocks that he found. He eventually od'd, and honestly those rocks are worth more than anything to me.

that's a legit story. i bet he found some epic rocks. the longer i look the more unique stones i find. a couple of weeks ago i found a quartz crystal just laying on a small rock island in the middle of a creek.

Horrible storms a day or so ago. Tornado warnings, high winds and horrible rain. My tent flew away...gone. Luckily I grabbed my things from it right before. Spent about 2 days in the cab of the farm truck waiting it out, everything wet. It sucked. But since then business as usual. Clear skies in the 80s.

When I was little I use to pick them up and look at them for hours at a time, now I still find them fascinating but don't really want to invest any time in them.

Yeah kinda iffy though. Walking through the orange groves I see mushrooms everywhere in the mulch. All kinds of mushrooms which I cant identify, I walk to the cow fields...and nothing. Not one mushroom of any kind, anywere. I dont know what to make of it. Funny you metion it, Im tossing logs on the fire from this wood/tree compost, and theyre covered in mushrooms. If I only knew...

I hate when you pick up a rock when it's wet and it looks really cool, but then not so much when it dries out D:

I find some really nice ones at the gem fair a couple times a year. I'm a sucker for crystals, always spend way too much on them but it's always worth it.

My daughter has a jar of "pretty rocks" that she collects wherever we happen to be.  When it gets full I'll sort through them and toss out the ordinary ones so she has room to keep collecting.

It's fun.  But let's just say a 3 year old doesn't have a very discerning eye

When arranged thusly as in the bottom picture...

Also, I must admit that art would be the only use I'd see for them.

I found a couple of nice brick sized rocks with fossils in them, in a creek behind my house (700ft. above sea level) I want to crack open one of them to see if there's better specimens inside. And Rolling Stones rock too... . . . :peace:

yes, i see what you're talking about. i guess the stones help to serve as place markers for memorable moments/events. also, i try to bring a little of the natural world (in its semi-unmolested form) into my living space.

helps to keep me grounded, i suppose.

Here's some cool shiny rocks of mine that usually sit in the window, can anyone tell what minerals are in them?  The 2 dark ones in the back are pretty heavy.  I'm pretty sure i know what one of them is... (besides the round barnacle one)

My guess for the heavy ones is also iron ore, they look like they are rusty   I actually didn't find them i got them from a geologist friend

The one with the big metallic chunks on the right i'm 99% sure is copper ore since there is some green oxidation on it.

The small one i really want to know.. It's really nice and sparkly all over like fine metallic crystals and a lot more blue on the blue bits than it looks in the pic.
