Re: 55 Gallon Drum Pasteurization
    #14226798 - 04/02/11 03:54 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

There's some good discussion and information on this forum today, started by Aris and Buckeye Oysters, about pasteurizing using 55 gallon drums.

I'm starting this thread so I don't walk on theirs.  I'm wondering if this small space right outside my basement door will work or not.  Of course, I'll take the screen door off the hinges, and, obviously, I haven't set up my system yet.  A tiny three-season room is above, sheltering this area, with joists I can use to help lift the straw out.  Any advice?  (We currently almost never use this area, so any advice such as get rid of the leaves or sweep it up can go without saying  )

Thanks,
Ed

(Also, if you happen to read this, RR, a side question: you've said it's beneficial to add 25%-30% straw to shiitake substrate.  Would that be instead of wood chips?  What exact substrate formula are you using these days? Thanks!)

my thoughts on it..

Do you have a place to drain all the water to?

Do you think you can squeeze around that with scalding hot substrate that you will be moving in and out of it?

Comfort and ease, you will find after your first round, would be a nice factor to not discourage you from doing it again.

If you have those points covered I'd say go for it.

To answer your q. from buckeyes thread..
if you look in my signature at the 55 gal pasteurizer you will have an idea  of what we are talking about. Think a big water heater thats not under pressure.  As to if its cheaper than gas, I'm sure it is not that much more.

I chose electric cause I didn't want to have to make trips to the store  if I ran out of gas in the middle of a run or have to monitor an open flame.

It appears it would have to be pumped out.  In addition, I can imagine CO buildup, possibly to the point of extinguishing the flame or rendering you unconscious/dead if you're down there with it.

I'd suggest placing the barrel at ground level.

Thanks Ozzy & RR,

There's a drain right next to the barrel, but I guess the CO would be the biggest problem ... comfort and ease, too, I suppose.  One of the advantages is that it would be out of view of the neighbors (city living, they're only 2 meters away on each side).  I suppose that's an easier problem to solve than CO poisoning.  OK, I appreciate the advice, guys.  I'll figure out how to do it at ground level.  Thanks-Ed

I'm sure that within the last 3+ months you've figured out how to balance CO2 / Death / Curious Neighbors & Pasteurization but I thought this might be helpful for you in the long run if you continue to expand your operation out-of-doors.
My Hero and I live 4 blocks from central Downtown (we're in the MidWest also) we started a couple hundred plants from seed indoors in December right in the giant, second story, picture window with grow lights and the works. From the street the tomato seedlings made us look like hardcore Dopers. Because it was so out in the open neighbors would ask me bluntly what the hell we had going on.... We ended up turning every square inch of available space in the yard into a garden so neighbors stop by all the time to see whats going on! Little do they know that the 20x10 tarp of horse manure in the middle of the driveway isnt just for a quick boost to the compost pile. I could cook meth on my front porch and my neighbors would think NOTHING of it. I'd just start saying something about hybrid lilies I want to cross and they wouldnt want to talk anymore. They "just think its so great that we are always doing work around the house"
I will use all this to my benefit when I start a set up like yours for straw. The straw will be for
#1 patching up dead grass spots
#2 Autumn/Halloween Decorations (I wont do any of these things I'll just say I messed up straw and will try more in a couple of months.) #3 Packing for Christmas Wreaths
#4 a life-size nativity scene (I want to do all this "straw cleaning" so I can bring it inside and not worry about bugs.)
#5 Starting a Vermicompost pile so I have worms for fishing
#6 Whatever absolute bullshit I come up with to amuse myself while bamboozling the neighbors; I can follow it up with.... My *insert relative* asked me to do this TERRIBLE project for them and I feel  really bad because I can but.... you know how it goes, right Neighbor?!

I would recommend to ANYONE that they throw some plants in the ground because there is no better excuse for a bunch of "Growing/Cultivating Supplies" out in the open. At this time of year you could go to a nursery, Walmart garden center, ect and get already started plants for 70% off. Even if you let $5 worth of crappy marigolds die over the next month, have 2 ugly tomatoes your nursing back to health or cram 15 bell peppers on your balcony, you'll have a great explanation for why your dickin'round with a 55gallon drum of straw in the middle of the city. And if you keep growing veggies/flowers then it would only be natural for grow lights to be on in your house.

cant wait to start some gourmet mushrooms

Heh, heh, heh ... Yeah, I just took RR's advice and stuck it in the yard on the side opposite the nosier neighbor (honestly, she called the cops on us once because our Labrador retrieve was outside at night for half an hour in the winter with snow on the ground--as if she didn't need to go at night, as if she weren't an effin Labrador retriever!) My brother and I sat out watching the blue flames under the barrel and we came up with the same thing--cleaning straw ... Soaking it in soapy water because it's dirty with bugs and whatnot, obviously, and "boiling" gets rid of the germs, of course, to keep the kids from getting sick.  Anyway, we just like clean straw--what about mushrooms?  I hope she liked the thick white nylon rope thrown over the tree branch I used to hoist the basket out of the barrel  A touch of tobaccie road.

NQS - my yard looks like absolute shit and no one has said a motherfucking thing about what's going on on MY property except to politely inquire about what it is I'm doing.

I always let them know that I'm long-term landscaping; making earth and cleaning the yard up.  It used to be bricks, rocks and glass.  It doesn't look great right now but it will in a year or two.

I could never ever in my life live around people who would call the police on me for what I'm doing on my property (non-violence of course).

I'm very sorry you have to deal with individuals who would treat you like that.

Calling the police on someone for a non-violent behavior immediately excludes you from being able to assume the adjective "nice".

It's not NICE to summon men with guns to intimidate and threaten people, ever.

You are a party to your own mistreatment and I no longer feel sorry for you.
