Field Guide - difference between Inedible and Poisonous?
    #14226233 - 04/02/11 01:51 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

What is the real difference? Why would a mushroom be considered inedible if it werent poisonous? Just because it tastes bad?

My guide says all of the active species are poisonous :P

Inedible includes anything that might make it impossible (in a realistic sense) to eat some mushrooms. Some of them would be like eating a piece of wood, some are simply so vile tasting that no sane person could eat one. There are mushrooms out there that are so nasty that even Captain MacIlvaine couldn't bring himself to eat one - and he actually liked stinkhorns and a few other things that most people would consider inedible.

Poisonous is used to describe mushrooms that contain "toxins" - chemical substances that have effects that aren't nutritious or beneficial. Psilocybin (and its chemical relatives) fall into this category because most people actually would find the effects (if taken unintentionally) alarming. There are lots of visits to emergency rooms around the country every year by people that have eaten psilocybin or something similar, including people that have taken them intentionally. Poisonous doesn't necessarily mean that there is any actual harm. Most poisonous mushrooms just make the victim feel sick. It's also worth noting that many mushrooms listed as poisonous are only toxic to some percentage of the population, not everybody. Some are even poisonous to only a minority. Generally, the listing as poisonous indicates that some people that eat them end up in the emergency room.

Happy mushrooming!
