Particular Shotgun FC Fanning Question
    #14196960 - 03/28/11 09:48 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

SO i realize its ideal to mist and fan 4-6 times a day if possible which really isn't the problem.

The problem is the location of the FC and how accessible it is to frequent fanning.
it sits on the of a closet.  The lid can be reached and removed but there is no way to get above the chamber to fan air directly into it.  FAE would be achieved if the lid was waved directly at the chamber due to all the holes on it and the overall air exchange in the closet forcing new air in through the newly opened top.

My question is will this be effective/ enough FAE where yield wont be affected negatively too much.  It would be a hassle to have to move a SGFC out every single time it needed to be fanned.  i feel like that would just make a huge mess of perlite.

Any suggestions would be nice.
Will fanning the FC directly be enough or should it always be fanned from the top down ( for evaporation and humidity purposes when spraying the cakes etc)

a sgfc should get pretty good fae to begin with due to all the holes. I would recommend getting a fan and positioning it so it creates some turbulence in the area, but not pointed directly at the fc. u could also hold the fan up to the opening for an extra boost.

isnt the point of fanning also to promote evaporation of sitting water on the sides of the FC?  i dont want extra water to breed contams just cause i cant reach the top of the FC to start fanning.  i have no intentions of getting a fan mounted in there which is why i was wondering if fanning the FC directly and in the general direction would be enough to cycle air through or if its necessary to directly fan above the FC itself.

im trying to follow RR's recommendations exactly which is why i wont even bother with something like a fan

not to cause evaporation from the tub, the point in fanning is to give lots of FAE, which will cause water evaporation from your cakes/substrate...which is a great pinning trigger, as well you dont want water just sitting on your cakes/subs/mushrooms for long periods of time it'll cause bacteria problems.

not too many decent locations in a small 2br apt without leaving it in the open for everyone and their mother to see when they come in.  id like to cultivate and keep it separate from my social life.

i guess i can leave it in the open until i have company and then move it in.  I feel like thats kind of a hassle though to have to move the FC any time i want to have someone over.

is a closet that bad of a place to fruit?

exactly which is why im asking if fanning the FC direction as opposed to over the top will be effective in doing that.  will the water evaporate off the cakes with that method of fanning or does it need to be forceful air directed on top of the cakes.

i appreciate the facts and advice u guys are giving but no one has answered my question.

it doesn't HAVE to be from the top, but from my personal experience if you fan over the top you're allowing for more air to be forced over your cakes/substrate, thus causing more evaporation quicker,

instead of fanning from the sides alot of your air currents are being blocked by the FC itself and only allowing small amounts thru the holes.

If that were the case, you wouldn't be putting a shotgun or any other terrarium in a closet, which is the worst possible place and will prevent the terrarium from functioning properly.

I don't understand, why is a closet such a bad idea? I have an open closet, sort of like a walk in one. It doesn't have shelves, I have a drawer chest that's about 4' tall and place it on top of that. There is no draft from the 3 sides but if has space to breathe. I also fan from the top which is accessible and the air blows out all the sides.

Also, I have bricks underneath which cause an air flow from the bottom if it's needed.

Is that an improper way because I really can't leave it in the open. My roommates would NOT be down with a grow going on in our place (especially since I hardly pay anything).

the reasoning is, because its a closed crampled area, it doesn't allow proper FAE to pass thru all holes, which is why the SGFC is designed the way it is..

you still get results, and sometimes good results if you mist, and fan properly to make up  for it being in a closd space

let me describe the exact setup before i rule it out then.  let me know if u feel this will still prevent sgfc functionality.

there is a grated rack in the closet with a decent amount of open space above it.  the grated rack is about 3 and a half feet long. 2 feet deep with about 3 ft of open space above it.  i have the sgfc elevated off the rack by about an inch and a half with large cans of tuna on either corner.  the closet door can be left open if necessary that wouldn't be a problem.

what do u think rr? if you don't recommended it i have a rubber made fold out table which will fit the chamber perfectly. if you feel judging by the dimensions i explained  ill get much greater yields having it out in the open then that is worth it to me.
out in the open would definitely make fanning the cakes directly from over top much easier too. If thats another factor which will hinder my growth in the closet with the door open.

Thanks RR i have spent a lot of time reading the forums and i always trust your advice  ( bought the dvds 3 months ago and been stalking the forums posts u respond to ever since)
