Mad props to Thích Quảng Đức. To give ones life in such a selfless and painful way for the freedom of others is a beautiful thing. He was inspired by the Medicine Buddha , Bhaiṣajyaguru. Thích really must have been in a state of extreme psychedelic transcendental mediation to be able to just sit there as you burn away.

He was an ultimate badass for all time. To sit there like that . . . and for a conviction, mind over matter. Amazing

There's a whole host of entities worthy of blame, trying to take the problem back to its root leads me to France though Whose to say what would've happened without their colonial meddling.

Whats with buddhists and self infliction? They sure go to great lengths to express themselves through pain. Must be the only way to identify. Thats all i can think of.

dont believe for a minute that they only hurt themselves, just prior to the dozen of so 'suicides' after Thich Quang Duc, they razed a village of Vietnamese Catholics, Buddhists arent always the pacifists we're led to believe, recently they've been killing Christians in Sri Lanka, they're even trying to force conversions of Christians over to Buddhism, Burma, Bangladesh, Loas... all the same. Buddhism in SE Asia is all about persecution

recently tho? maybe they are just transgressing to be violent? I was just saying they go to some crazy lengths to prove points, like in this article.
This makes fasting to death sound like a joke. Some Buddhist monks called Sokushinbutsu in Japan not only committed suicide; they also did it in a way that led to their mummification. The process was started with a diet of nuts and fruits combined with hardcore physical activities. Elimination of body fat was achieved with the first step. The second step involved bouts of vomiting, loss of body fluids and poisoning of the body to deter a maggot attack: accomplished by consuming barks, root and a poisonous tea for a thousand days.
In the last stage, the monk would enter a stone tomb, sit in a lotus position and wait for death. He would sound a bell daily to let his fellow monks know he was alive. And then when the “no-bell” day came, the monks would seal the tomb, wait for another 1000 days before opening it to verify the mummification.

Buddhist don't consider self-immolation or starving yourself to death wrong, unlike most ways of committing suicide.
But then again, if a Buddhist monk says something is wrong, I don't think he is very enlightened.
Quote:
A number of Buddhist monks (including the most famous case of Thích Quảng Đức) immolated themselves in protest of the discriminatory treatment endured by Buddhists under the Roman Catholic administration of President Ngô Đình Diệm in South Vietnam — even though violence against oneself is prohibited by most interpretations of Buddhist doctrine. The twenty-third chapter of the Lotus Sutra recounts the life story of the Bodhisattva Medicine King, which served as the main inspiration for the monks and nuns who self-immolated to protest the Vietnam War. In the Sutra, the Medicine King demonstrates his insight into the selfless nature of his body by ritualistically setting his body aflame, spreading the "light of the Dharma" for twelve hundred years. Thich Nhat Hanh adds: "The bodhisattva shined his light about him so that everyone could see as he could see, giving them the opportunity to see the deathless nature of the ultimate."[6]
Quote:
The last words of Thích Quảng Đức before his self-immolation were documented in a letter he had left:
Before closing my eyes and moving towards the vision of the Buddha, I respectfully plead to President Ngo Dinh Diem to take a mind of compassion towards the people of the nation and implement religious equality to maintain the strength of the homeland eternally. I call the venerables, reverends, members of the sangha and the lay Buddhists to organise in solidarity to make sacrifices to protect Buddhism.[4]
David Halberstam wrote:
I was to see that sight again, but once was enough. Flames were coming from a human being; his body was slowly withering and shriveling up, his head blackening and charring. In the air was the smell of burning human flesh; human beings burn surprisingly quickly. Behind me I could hear the sobbing of the Vietnamese who were now gathering. I was too shocked to cry, too confused to take notes or ask questions, too bewildered to even think... As he burned he never moved a muscle, never uttered a sound, his outward composure in sharp contrast to the wailing people around him.[24]
