Flies
    #14223709 - 04/01/11 10:23 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Well, im having lots of tiny flies problems, despite using fine wire mesh in a standard room. Ive used a couple of techniques and combined them all:-

-electric bug zapper
-sticky tape
-1/2 inch beer or wine in the bootle
-positive air from inside room to outside

Frogs, can't really get high up the shelves. Praying mantis, i guess will, but catching all and the cool tempt might be a thing for it. And so, Venus fly trap i guess?

Are there any other methods around, which one has used successfully and would advise?

I understand that mushrooms, under fungi kingdom naturally will attract flies and i do not wish to use any chemicals.

Do you have any rotting potatoes laying around?

I ran some trials on a bacteria that kills them(Bacillus thuringienis israelensis) commonly found in mosquito dunks. I put some in the water I used to mist and it seemed to work but it could have been coincidental.

Wikipedia:
Bacillus thuringiensis serovar israelensis (Bti) is a group of bacteria used as biological control agents for larvae stages of certain Dipterans. Bti produces toxins which are effective in killing various species of mosquitoes, fungus gnats, and blackflies, while having almost no effect on other organisms. Indeed this is one of the major advantages of B. thuringiensis products in general is that they are thought to affect few non-target species.

BTI does help reduce the population, you can also try shallow yellow bowls of vinegar.

BTI and all those mentioned sounds complex.

Does spraying bleach or hydrogen peroxide kill the flies? And will it affect the mushrooms?

How does it sound complex? Add a few bits of mosquito dunk to some water and let it sit for a day. Filter the "dunk particles" from the water then put it in a spray bottle and mist the cakes.

How many flys are you dealing with now? If they get out of control you should dispose of the cakes as they are not worth saving. BTI will only kill them in the larval stage of growth, it will not harm the flys.

Don't spray hydrogen peroxide unless you have mold.

I wouldn't use bleach unless sterilizing a surface.

If you are doing pf, they climb right through the verm and magically appear in the fc. Put rubber bands and coffee filters over those. Put fly strips hanging around the terrarium. cover your fc holes with panty-hose.:shrug:they're bad around here in the summer

Ok, ill have to look for the mosquito dunk which i probably think, will not be found from where i come from.

And if i do, then the larval stage will be inerrupted. And most likely, in the worst scenario, ill have to spray insecticide on ghe remainder flies. Will it harm the mushrooms?

I put coriander leaves, lemon grass and chrsanthenum leaves sparsely over my shelves and i noticed, less flies are hoveringaround. I guess there are some natural chemicals present in them, but which one is doing the work, ive no idea!

Anyone knows precisely why and how many days later do i have to change to a fresh cut?
