Hey you Cali People

I am taking a roadtrip out to Cali in the next couple months. Early June.
I am looking for a place to go where I can camp, fish, have some solitude, but also be somewhat close to some stores in case I need to re-up on supplies.
At first I had my eyes set on Redding, but it's a 20 hour bus ride. I am not totally against it, but is it worth it?
What places would you recommend? State parks are not out of the question either, as long as they allow campfires. I know in the summer some places are strict about no fires.
Anyways. I am just making my starting preparations now so hopefully someone can point me to a good spot to go to. A small fishing town would be perfect!
Thanks!

Haha talk about perfect timing, I just got off the phone with a friend of mine whos going to the Army, we want to take a road trip to Cali sometimes in the next few months.
I'm keeping my eye on this thread!
-------------------- December 1960: "They took the drug one evening at Leary's house and had a profound experience, during which Ginsburg prophetically realized that it was a time to start "a peace and love movement". He then ran naked around the house, attempted to get Kruschev and Kennedy on the telephone and announced to the operator that he was God."

Meh, Redding is sorta centralized with a bunch of outdoor stuff in that general part of the state, but it's still the valley.
But some suggestions of you want solitude and camping. Check out the "Alturas" area north east of Redding. Other than a very small town or two it's all wilderness.
And anywhere on the east side of the sierras is Ahhh-mazing, my favorite part of the state is the eastern Sierras. Look down around Bishop, there's tons of places to camp and some fantastic fishing . Very desolate with strange land & vibes around there, I love it.
Or up along the north coast, which is the only part of the state I'm not to familiar with.
If you're looking for camping, desolation and solitude stick to northern california . But really though, there's so many different climates/geographies and land this state offers.
Have a good one...

I just need somewhere I can fish, that will be a part of my diet. I plan on just taking the minimums... protein powders, bars, and small stuff packed with calories.
I plan on spending about 6 weeks out there.

Will keep that in mind. Hoping to find some of that good medical marijuana as well before I trek back to Nazi-land aka Arizona.

Look up Castle Crags ,Trinity Alps, castle lake, Whiskeytown lake. These areas are all within striking distance of Redding. The Trinity Alps are an amazing little mountain range. 100's of small lakes that has an alpine setting without some of the altitude problems and alot to offer.
Some of these sugestions are fee areas and state parks but mostly wilderness areas that are free of charge for camping you just need to aquire a wilderness pass at the USFS office.

State parks are OK with me, they usually have little stores on site where you can pick up extra fishing gear and stuff which is always handy. especially when you arent familiar with the local fish and what they bite

You should check out Los Padres National Forest. It runs from Monterey down to Ventura. One of the few wilderness areas that allows camp fires- with a permit (free, they just want you to sign a waiver). Lots of cool places to backpack out there, and the central coast is beautiful. (As are places further up like Big Sur and Monterey. I guess they're kinda central too.)
EDIT: Guess you can fish there too. Rivers and streams. Don't know if this is more remote than you're thinking.

careful about pot growers with guns in the national forests of the emerald triangle especially (thats mendocino, humboldt, and trinity counties, but everywhere it's a possibility. i don't want to scare you because i'm sure people use that area for fishing, etc, but i would stay near the trails and don't wander into the real pathless wildernesses. thats what i always heard when i was there, not sure if its true or not, but with millions of dollars at stake i can believe some people have been shot. consider doing something on the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail), a highly travelled (well, its not exactly like standing in line at the supermarket) but there's alot of people who use it, so it would be super cool and no worries about gun toting growers , and the towns near the trail cater to people who use it, so they have all the supplies. http://www.pcta.org/ <a PCT website.

I will have to check that out. I dont mind tearing down camp every so often and moving on, so that might be an option.
It's actually sounding like my best option right now.
I just want something that is somewhat remote, somewhere I can fish, and be at peace.
How easy is it to come across medical marijuana in cali? are all the places pretty strict about having to have an ID card?

if you do it, park your car next to the trail and walk like a few miles, maybe a day or two hike, away from the road to get some peace and quiet. the mathmatical calculation is, how far would 5 annoying people be able to carry a shitton of beer into the woods, which usually isn't that far.

I am going to be taking a greyhound bus from Arizona to the trial. I really like that Pacific Coast Trial. I just need to do some mapping and figure out where re-supply areas are and what not. it seems well traveled so it should be fun. I might take the greyhound to Redding and hike it Southbound towards Arizona.
All going to depend on bus routes and shit. Lots of planning to do in 2 1/2 months.

post your questions as you get them, i'd be happy to help, i did 300 miles on the Appalacian Trail, and i'm sure others here have done this sort of thing too. its awesome. i'm thinking of doing the PCT myself, i'm actually really pumped.
