What's going on readers? I just purchased some Sierra Nevada Big Foot (2011) and I'm trying to see what is the best way of aging it and approximately how long to age. Thank you for all and any help! And here is a pick for of the beer drawer!

Bigfoot ages really well. I have some '07, '09, '10 and '11 Bigfoots aging right now.
Best way to age beer is dark and cool. Most beers age best in cellar temps but Barleywines like Bigfoot age well at room temp, just keep it out of any light.

Good man! I live in Florida so no cellars here so I'll just keep it tucked away in the closet. I bought two 2011 so I'm tasting one right now and it's great! I'm going to buy some more to age. Have you tasted the 2011? If so, how does it compare to the other years? Thanks again!

I just watched that whole video a min ago... Laughed the whole way through.... I feel bad for her. Must be embarrassing being her and all the other kids that participated in the making of the video...

Yeah this years batch is really good. They're pretty consistent each year but the flavor really changes as it ages. Bigfoot is a really hoppy barleywine but as it ages the hops die out and the malt really comes forward. I'm gonna be tasting these Bigfoots that I have in a vertical tasting pretty soon, that should be interesting.

Very nice! How would you go about doing a vertical test?

Taste the beers in the order they were brewed and note the differences in each vintage.

Ahhhh. That's great that you have so many years! It'll be a few years till I can do a vertical test.... Is there a max amount of years that you can age a beer till it turns bad in some way?

It all depends on the beer. Real hoppy beers like IPA's and Pale ales should not be aged at all and drunk as fresh as possible. I will never drink a DIPA or IPA that is more than a month old and rarely will buy one from a brewery that does not put the bottled on date on the beer. 5-6 years is a good average time to age beers that age well like Imperial stouts, Barleywines, Sour ales and Belgian style ales.
I have the whole collection of the Stone Vertical Epic series which started in '02 and they release another one each year until 2012 then they should be drunk in a vertical tasting sometime in 2012 so thats 10 years of aging, I can't wait until I crack those bad boys open.
