What type of coir do you use? Is this the right stuff?
    #14215791 - 03/31/11 04:36 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I just bought some coir from a pet store and am wondering if it is the right type to use.  I'm going to use it doing Magash's Rye Tek.  It's called Plantation Soil and is made from compressed coco husk.  I think it looks ok, the store had some other stuff that looked like hair bundled up, I new that wasn't the right coco.  Here is a link to the web site.  Thanks for any help, ShroomDonger.

the stuff you want looks like a big brown turd compressed very dense no stringy or flaky shit just a smooth compressed brick not all packages that are coir say coir so you just have to know your material. if its really hard to get apart and break up you should have the right stuff.

This stuff looks like a bricked turd,  Should be ok i guess.  It's not stringy, its hard and looks like it will break up somewhat even.

this is not true.. I normally get my bricks from a hydro shop, and have no issues.. for sure, look on the label, but i have never run across a brick with trich added at the hydro shop I go to.. but check the label, just in case..

as for the chunky stuff, im using some right now.. it will still work.. the mycelium rips through it like no ones business.. although, i still prefer the finer coir, the chunky will work too.. the finer coir is just easier to deal with, but no one in town had it.. odd, i thought.. lol

You do all this stuff to sterilize your substrate, keep everything in a sterile environment, keep yourself clean, your house clean, all to avoid getting a Trichoderma contamination.

And then you case with something that comes with Trich in it. :P So bad idea.

sterilization of your substrate is the quickest way to contams.. lol.. pasteurization is what you want..

but yeah.. keep nice and clean.. super clean.. its worth the extra steps..

Ok, I have read about Trichoderma some already.  I was confused with the wording of trich.  I was thinking "Trich" was some kind of additive they put in certain coirs.  This clears that up!  Thanks!

Ok, now I'm confused agin, lol!  If I pressure cook, I'm pasturizing, right?  And what do you define as the difference between pasturizing and sterilizing?  In the meantime i will go look this up again.  Lots of information to take in!

When using a pressure cooker you are sterilizing

Quote:

"Unlike sterilization, pasteurization is not intended to kill all micro-organisms in the food. Instead pasteurization aims to reduce the number of viable pathogens so they are unlikely to cause disease (assuming the pasteurized product is stored as indicated and consumed before its expiration date)."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasteurization

Quote:

"Sterilization (or sterilisation, see spelling differences) is a term referring to any process that eliminates (removes) or kills all forms of life, including transmissible agents (such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, spore forms, etc.) present on a surface, contained in a fluid, in medication, or in a compound such as biological culture media.[1][2] Sterilization can be achieved by applying the proper combinations of heat, chemicals, irradiation, high pressure, and filtration."
