Filtering Oil

So I bought a deep fryer.
Professional style immersion heating element. I love it Anyways, after making some fried chicken, fries, ravioli, the oil has gotten pretty dirty. Oil is pretty expensive. Whats the best way to filter this? I've tried a coffee filter, but it seems to take forever. I'm guessing it would take an hour to change just a couple cups because it drips so slow. Anyone know of a btter way to filter it and extend the life of the oil?

where do you live? Here 16oz of peanut oil costs $4.. You can find the stuff by the gallon but it costs bling...
I usualy dont fry stuff because I dont do it often enough and each time I need to spend like $8 on oil alone and then I just throw it away.. I usualy use that vegetable/canola oil mix stuff, the generic kind.. And still it costs bling.

Take a funnel, set into a milk jug or other container. Then put cheese cloth or paper towel (really slow) on the funnel, and take a rubber band and band it to the funnel.

A trick I picked up from working in a bar and grill is to put a whole potato in the oil and fry it. Most of the larger bits and almost all of the smaller particles stuck to it, then just remove the spud and toss it. whatever was left over went thru a funnel with a fine mesh screen in it. Worked like a charm.

Keep some of the old oil and add it to the new oil, helps in frying...

Here's a post from one of my favorite foodie bloggers:
How to reuse cooking oil
There are some safety concerns, and it's well-worth the (short) read.

http://www.webstaurantstore.com/10-fryer-oil-cone-filter-holder/682FCH101.html
this thing and a bucket works well. I let my fryer sit for a bit to settle but then pour it still warm so its thinned out and will always toss the bottom 1/5 of the oil. It seems after a couple hours of settling it will collect the crap there then pour real slow and steady to not disturb it. I fry 6-7 times a year now and have a fryer that holds about 5 gallons and an 18 pound bird so I try to be cheap but the methods I use work without having nastiness.
The cone filters won't get everything and it is real important to keep using a strainer to catch the floaters and crap as you fry. The chunks of breading keep burning unless you get them out and if they burn the oil is fucked unless you get the high dollar machine with super fine filters like and MCd's
My fry set up when I go somewhere is the fryer, bucket of used oil plus new, strainer, cone filters and holder, french fry chopper, tongs and scooper, all batter dry ingredients in big tupperwear also liquids ready to go mixed with eggs. Do not forget big strong garbage bags to pack it all up in.
edit: I am looking into home diesel fuel filters. The fit on the buckets and are 200 micron. I am going to order one and see how it goes soon.
