Music production question: Swing beat.
    #14217943 - 03/31/11 10:58 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Anyone here who makes garage or post-dubstep know how to correctly make a swing rhythm? I cant seem to get it right and also what tempo is that genre usually at? it doesnt feel like 140 to me.

the rhythm figure would be to represent 2 quarter notes as a dotted quarter note and eight note, played with a triplet feel.  Used in jazz a lot.

Yeah its usually notated as a triplet figure or a dotted eighth/sixteenth depending on the style and tempo.  Never heard it in dubstep though so not sure whats appropriate there.

Yeah, thats right.  It's usually also 4/4 but when the tempo gets fast I like to cut the time.

Dubstep is like 110-140 range I'd say

You could conceivably go slower I guess

There's plenty of swing tunes in other time signatures but thats more the jazz realm.. commercial music is pretty much always 4/4 so people can easily dance to it, besides the fact that its so familiar to people now.

I think its with Ellington but I'm not positive.  Its not the exact one I was listening to but he plays a similar solo.. same tune.

This movie has a couple of great old ragtime/swing jazz pieces.  The movie is also worth a watch when tripping cause it's pretty fucking weird. (the legend of 1900)

I love it 'cause the white dude owns this fucking guy...
