My first few times with the pf-tek I followed as closely as I could to the letter of the instructions, but met face to face with Professor Failure. Why do I sound stoned?

Just follow PF Tek to the letter and you will have an extremely high chance for success. I would use his PFMR strain for the first go around, then, when you get that figured out, go to another strain.------------------ -ChesterCopperpott-

Try to find a second hand pressure cooker or borrow one from a friend - it's worth the effort

Last I heard your gonna need one. If price is your gripe go to ebay. I got an old one there for 20.00 and that includes shipping all the way across the state. If your really serious about making this a hobby you should get one.

I don't use a pressure cooker and none of my jars get contaminated. I baked my substrate in the over at 350 for 20 minutes before I mixed them and put them in the jars. This seems to get of the nasty bacteria that pressure cooking will kill. It takes a little bit more time, but a little caution breeds success. Then I put them in a slow boil bath for an hour.

no pressure cooker here either. just boil your jars in a big pot(or maybe two big pots). let them cool totally in these COVERED pot (should take a few hours to cool down) and innoculate. never lost a jar

Hey I have a pressure cooker but it doesnt tell me the pressure inside. Its one of those old ones with the weight things on top that bobs back and forth when the pressure rises. Can I use this, or is knowing the pressure inside vital? Thanks
